mars

NASA Goddard’s CGI vision of how the now Red Planet might have looked if – as many scientists believe – it once had water and thus, the potential for life.

Like Mars. With water on it.

The artist’s concept is based on evidence that Mars was once very different. Rapidly moving clouds suggest the passage of time, and the shift from a warm and wet to a cold and dry climate is shown as the animation progresses. The lakes dry up, while the atmosphere gradually transitions from Earthlike blue skies to the dusty pink and tan hues seen on Mars today.

Peter Cogan writes:

I work in a building overlooking the three big resevoirs in Sandyford. The largest one seems full enough, but the two smaller ones seem to be at low levels. You can see the water mark indicating a recent reduction in volume. Have been trying to get info online about the standard or expected capacity but can’t find anything.

Anyone?

ballymore(The entrance Liffey Waterworks water treatment plant,, Ballymore Eustace, Co Kildare)

Dublin City Council said the situation has arisen because of a problem at its biggest water treatment plant.
Production at the Ballymore Eustace plant has dropped by up to 25%.
Council engineers are still investigating the cause, but believe the recent heavy rain has made the reservoir water more difficult to treat at the plant.
A council spokesperson said that although the incoming water is still of a satisfactory quality, its constituent characteristics have changed.

Two University of Bath undergraduates Carmen Cheng and Matthew Guy have created a maze with a jagged surface where they can control the direction of liquid using the Leidenfrost effect.

It occurs when a liquid comes in contact with something really hot – about twice as hot as the liquid’s boiling point, the liquid never comes in direct contact with the surface; vapor acts as a barrier that keeps the two separated.

A friend of mine took this on her phone while walking one evening recently in Lucan. She said the guy looked around at her and and looked away when she took out her phone. It was around 7pm. Did anyone else see him?

waterbomb

When a road grader and a transport truck collided, far from the nearest fire station on a remote stretch of the Trans-Labrador highway in Canada, a water bomber was sent to deal with the blaze consuming the cab of the truck.

Which it did.

Both drivers survived.
