ocean

A Ted-Ed animation wherein Scott Gass explains the immensity of the ‘one big ocean’ of planet Earth.

For the sake of perspective, as the US Geological Survey showed with a memorable graphic last year, every last drop of fresh water, sea water, ground water, water vapor and water in biological matter would form a sphere just 1,384km in diameter.

But use the cheap digestives if you’re dunking (to be on the safe side).

‘Jimmy The Head’ writes:

“I live in Dublin 5 and have recently had the most disgusting water supply. It usually cuts off at night or goes very low pressure, but when it works its a very murky brown/green colour (above). We usually leave the tap running for about 10 mins before it goes clear again but still has a weird taste. My neighbours have all had the same problems. Only been like this for the last few weeks.”

A series of experiments by Brusspup showing the effect of a loud 24Hz sine wave on streams of water, with the camera frame rate adjusted to match the vibration of the air. Brusspup adds:

If you want the water to look like it’s moving backward set the frequency to 23hz. If you want to look like it’s moving forward in slow motion set it to 25hz.

As modelled by software engineer Kevin Gill, who admits that these images of a transformed dusty Red Planet aren’t terribly scientific – more an educated guess combining hi-res NASA images of Earth with his own open-source learning programme and a bit of artistic licence.

Maybe more than a bit.

Shut up and start the reactor.
