A behind the scenes look at Donal Moloney’s Sinéad O’Connor shoot.

Donal sez:

“This was the first of two great days craic shootin with Sinéad. Originally, this was planned as just a selection of promo shots for her new album but the record company liked the shots a lot and pulled the original cover to use one of these…subsequently Sinéad renamed the album “I’m not Bossy, I’m the Boss’.”

What you may need to know:

1. Wait… what?

2. Well, the worldwide box office for The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011) was a cool $136m on a budget of $10m, so this was a no-brainer.

3. Worst sequel title since I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer (2006). Or ‘Great Expectations 2: Greater Expectations’.

4. Dev Patel really needs a new agent.

5. Google Richard Gere and the first result is still ‘Richard Gere Gerbil’. Once and for all… that never happened.

6. Broadsheet Prognosis: Smells like wee and sherry.

Release Date: February 27,  2015.

The decision published today of the ‘compliance committee’ of the  Broadcasting Authority of Ireland upholding a complaint about a RTÉ Radio 1 Derek Mooney Show item last  January discussing the latest Civil Partnership figures with RTÉ’s Michael Murphy and Tiernan Brady of GLEN, the Gay and Lesbian Equality network.

GLEN Chairman Kieran Rose asks:

“Can lesbian and gay people not now talk about their lives and their aspirations as Irish citizens on the airwaves, or about their experiences of love and commitment without somebody opposing them?
Today’s ruling by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland raises worrying concerns about the nature of debate and discussion on issues of current affairs across the airwaves in Ireland.
The ruling has implications for all issues that are topics under public discussion, not just lesbian and gay issues.
Does it now mean contributors to a broadcast programme may not now talk about possible future constitutional change on any issue, unless the programme segment has opposing views? We would have serious concerns that this ruling would restrict open debate on issues that directly impact lesbian and gay people in Ireland”

Ferguson, Missouri last night

What transpired in the streets appeared to be a kind of municipal version of shock and awe; the first wave of flash grenades and tear gas had played as a prelude to the appearance of an unusually large armored vehicle, carrying a military-style rifle mounted on a tripod. The message of all of this was something beyond the mere maintenance of law and order: it’s difficult to imagine how armored officers with what looked like a mobile military sniper’s nest could quell the anxieties of a community outraged by allegations regarding the excessive use of force. It revealed itself as a raw matter of public intimidation.

Mount Trenchard Direct Provision Centre

Three of the residents have gone on hunger strike in protest over the lengthy delays in the asylum process and the conditions in which they have to live while waiting for their applications to be processed. The three men – from Congo, Afganistan and Iraq – say they have all been in Ireland at least a decade waiting for their applications to be processed

…Another of the protestors – who is from the Congo – described the direct provision centre as being like “an open prison”.He said he had been in the asylum system for the past 14 years and had lived in Mount Trenchard for the past three years.
“There are some people who have been waiting up to 12 years in this place,” he said.

From 1992, an appearance on the Late Late Show where Cliff Richard was joined by the previous guest, comedian Ben Elton.

Uncle Gaybo asked him the following question:

Gay Byrne: “How do you respond to the old cliché, Cliff, you’re too good to be true?”

Cliff Richard: “Well I suppose what can you do about truths?”

Byrne: “You really are asking for it, aren’t you?”

Richard: “You’ve brought out the absolute worst in me. I’ve said, I’ve spent since 26 years ago, I became a Christian so my lifestyle took on a whole new look and feel for me which I really enjoy. And ah I feel it’s the right thing for me to do. And I’ve spent nearly all that time saying to people ‘You can’t..’. The media do want to put us into bags. They want to compartmentalize us and say well he’s the goody two-shoes. And for a little while it was Bob Geldof and I had the weight taken off my shoulders for a little while you know. He was Saint Bob for a while.”

Ben Elton: “But he kept swearing and that was the end of that. You’ve got to do that. Swear more.”

Richard: “But I’ve been saying to people it’s crazy if people actually believe that people like myself are too good to be true, then they just don’t understand human nature at all. Nobody is perfect. Nobody. All I want to do is show my best side rather than my worst. There is a side of me that I don’t like and I try to what’s the word sub..what’s it?”

Elton: “Em..subdue it..?”

Richard: “Sublimate it.”

Elton: “Cover it up.”

Richard: “And obviously I succeed. So it’s a side of me I don’t want to share necessarily. And I guess a lot of people just don’t understand it. And so I get labelled ‘the goody two-shoes’. And it just means that I don’t cuss and swear at people or perhaps it means that I’m just nice with people and they consider that… What I don’t understand is though that is a kind of reversal of things isn’t it? So that nowadays people like myself it’s a derogatory term ‘Ugh the goody two-shoes’. In other words, trying to be right and good is becoming a thing that you deride.”
