Today’s Irish Sun
In today’s Irish Sun, (behind paywall), Neil O’Riordan writes:
“Business tycoon Denis O’Brien coughs up a staggering 70 per cent of [Martin O’Neill and Roy Keane’s] pay packets – which amounts to €910,000 of the combined €1.3million wages.
…
“We have learned that O’Neill earns a cool €1million a year while sidekick Keane collects €300,000 per annum.”
Meanwhile, RTÉ reports:
“The Football Association of Ireland secured a debt write-down of €11.7 million, delegates at their Annual General Meeting in Athlone heard today.”
…“Today’s AGM was Chief Executive John Delaney’s tenth at the helm of the Association, a period that has been financially challenging for the FAI. In his review of the year, he said the highlight was the refinancing of the stadium debt. The Board recently asked Delaney to continue as chief executive for another five years, a move that’s expected to cost the association €1.8 million or €360,000 a year.”

The Dart
Erin Fornoff writes:
On Thursday I left my (red, beat up-looking) wallet on the Dart. It had a good bit of money it (unusually), my house key, and pretty much everything I need to survive including Irish ID, etc. Yesterday someone turned it in to the station with all the cash in it and everything else. He left his name as “John Joe” and put down a random fake number. I am assuming it was the Olympic Champion boxer. Even if it isn’t the Olympic champion boxer, I am dying to thank the hell out of whoever brought it back! THANK YOU JOHN JOE. YOU ARE THE GREATEST MAN ALIVE.

From RTÉ’s Nine O’Clock News on Wednesday
On the RTÉ Nine O’Clock News on Wednesday there was a segment by RTÉ’s Carole Coleman on the Gaza-Israel conflict, during which a woman in Gaza was on camera shouting.
As the woman is in the frame, Ms Coleman says in her report, ‘This Palestinian says she’s ready to strap on an explosive device and fight.’
Further to this, Abubakr Elsayed, in Donacarney, Co Meath, has created a petition calling for an apology from RTÉ.
From his letter to RTÉ:
I am writing to express my displeasure with your report on RTE news called “Hamas leader rules out ceasefire before negotiations” broadcast on 23/07/2014. In this report the news reporter states that the women in the segment says “She is ready to strap on an explosive device and fight”. Though this is not the case as she clearly said in Arabic “Everyday four kids die, everyday five kids die, where is the world, where is the religion”. This is obvious biased and deceitful reporting.
Anyone?

Meanwhile, in Chicago:
It’s like Garth Brooks never left. Though he hasn’t performed in Chicago since the late ‘90s, the country star lined up a 10-night residency Friday at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois, and then promptly sold it out.
Tickets ($56.94 plus service fees) went on sale Friday for concerts Sept. 4, 5, 6 (two shows), 11, 12 (two shows), 13 (two shows) and 14 at Allstate. The shows mark Brooks’ first Chicago-area appearances in 17 years.
Mmmf.

A new vending machine from a company called Pugedon dispenses food for the strays of Istanbul every time a bottle is deposited for recycling.
In a city known for its high number of stray dogs and cats (an estimated 150,000), it’s more of an awareness-raising gesture than a solution to the wider problem, but still.
