Leinster RFC in a partnership with the RDS this morning details of a new arena to replace the stadium in Ballsbridge, Dublin. (top)
An arena?
Our Aaron collared Marcus ó Buachalla, (above) Leinster RFC head of communications for a ‘quiet word’.
Aaron: [exasperated] “What fresh madness is this?”
Marcus ó Buachalla: “The RDS Arena is going to be redeveloped by the RDS and Leinster Rugby. The first stage of the process is a worldwide architectural competition to select the best design possible in order to deliver a world class multi-purpose arena details here. We will we see the winning design by December 2014 hopefully.”
Aaron: “When will building work start?”
ó Buachalla: “Allowing for a 12 month planning process, in April 2016. The new RDS Arena be unveiled to Leinster Rugby fans for the 2017/18 season.
Aaron: “Where on EARTH will the games take place while this arena is getting built?
ó Buachalla: “The games will still take place in the RDS as the redevelopment will take place in stages….”
Aaron: [sarcastically] “Great news for ticket holders,..”
ó Buachalla: “As with any redevelopment, there may be some level of inconvenience but every effort will be made to accommodate all season ticket holders during the construction and no season ticket holder will be without a seat during that phase of the build. Ultimately this is about delivering a world class multi-purpose arena that will be to the long term benefit of all our supporters but our season ticket holders in particular who are our most valued supporters. The new RDS Arena will provide a far superior match day experience for those supporters.”
Aaron. “Go on then. HOW much?
ó Buachalla:: €20 million
Aaron: “What the f….”
ó Buachalla: “…however this will be privately funded by the RDS. There will be no Government/public money.”
Aaron: “So THIS is why ticket prices are going UP?”
ó Buachalla: “No. Leinster Rugby is a partner in this process and we fully support the RDS but we are only an anchor tenant at the RDS. This is being funded by the RDS privately.”
Aaron: “Where does this leave the mascot?”
ó Buachalla:”Leo?.”
Aaron: “Yeah the lion. I suppose he’s out? Doesn”t ‘fit in’ with your ‘plans’?
ó Buachalla:”Leo stays..”
Aaron: “Alright. Thanks.”
ó Buachalla:: “Thanks.”

[The Old Crescent Rugby Football Club, Limerick last night]
That’ll Do Pig.
Kieran Ryan writes:
“Last night the Australian Tag Rugby Squad arrived in Limerick where, after a brief “international incident” during the Australian national anthem (see top), they played out a thrilling series of games against the Limerick regional tag sides. Australia proved far too strong for the Limerick Women’s and Mixed Senior teams but the Limerick Men’s and Mixed Open teams led Australia at half time in their games. The Mixed Open game was a thriller, with Limerick leading with 10 minutes to go, before Australia pounced for two late bonus tries (2 points) to run out 15-10 winners.
Today the attention turns to the International Tri Nations tournament between Ireland, Australia and Great Britain. Each nation will play each other in Men’s, Women’s, Mixed Senior and Mixed Open games. The matches kick off at 3pm in Old Crescent RFC, Limerick and run until 9pm.”

In 2012, Alisha Jordan, then aged 18, from Co Meath arrived in New York to play Gaelic football for the Cavan Ladies of New York…
At the peak of her fitness and hard work after the championship Alisha looked forward to getting ready for the next season…Walking home from a night out in New York Alisha was horrifically attacked by a male stranger who smashed her in the face with a concrete slab.
Alisha had to undergo two reconstructive surgeries, the first, an eight hour surgery to insert 10 metal plates and twenty-two screws to re-build her fractured skull. She then had reconstructive surgery to her nose to build it again.Regaining her sight, walking and then running, against all of the odds and the doctors requests, Alisha worked every day at rebuilding her strength and friends, family and her team mates stood by her all the way….
Alisha (holding trophy) with the Cavan Ladies of New York following a championship win.
Alisha continues to play for Cavan in New York and she also plays for the New York team who are due to play the Junior Championship in Ireland this August.
“I love the sport now more than ever and it will always be a vital part of my life. Since I was young and playing with my home club Skryne [Co Meath] I fell in love with the amazing support system that surrounds being part of a team…Above all, the whole attack made me not realise the bad that’s in the world that could hurt me, but the unbelievable good that’s in our everyday life. I’m very happy the latter outweighs the first”
