Shots of the old medieval quarter of Cork City.

Taken by Broadsheet contributor Mike McGrath-Bryan over the weekend.

Sez Mike:

An area laid waste by recent business closures but ignored by gentrification, the Old Town area of the city has long possessed its own character. Though urgent economic assistance is needed for the area, she continues to show a resilience – typical of Corkonians in general.

A real character shines through, while the intervention of community group Reimagine Cork has given the place a touch of colour, with a DIY feel.

A look at some iconic reggae album covers, photographed in their original locations around London over four decades later, for Covers, an anthology of classic sleeves and the Thames-side surroundings that informed them, by photographer Alex Bartsch.

Writes Erin MacLeod in Pitchfork:

“London must be, outside of Jamaica, the place that is most richly influenced by Jamaican people living there,” says Al Newman (AKA Al Fingers) of One Love Books, the publisher behind Covers and a number of evocative books related to reggae. “I grew up in London and I grew up with Jamaican culture. But it is also kind of an unknown history to many people in the UK.”

The book has successfully completed Kickstarter funding, but is still available for pre-order here.

A spectacular close up of a Fiery Throated Hummingbird taken by Canadian photographer Jess Findlay in the Talamanca Mountains of Costa Rica.Sez he:

Several of these hummingbirds were visiting a nectar feeder. As they fed hungrily, often quarrelling with one another, occasionally one would get displaced onto a nearby branch. I waited by the branch for a couple hours, staying very still. I used a telephoto lens with a special attachment that allowed me to focus on close subjects. What made this a challenge was how fidgety these birds can be and the fact that the full spectrum of colour is only seen when they pause at a very specific angle.

Ho Thuy Tien waterpark, just outside the city of Hue, between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh.

Abandoned before opening for reasons never quite clarified – its existence denied by some travel agencies – the waterpark has become something of a cult destination for tourists, as nature slowly reclaims its territory.

Twelve years after completion, the park sits empty, except, perhaps, for a family of crocodiles rumoured to live there.
