laraki-2laraki-6laraki-4 laraki-3laraki-5laraki-1V12 Laraki by Eric van Hove is an incredibly detailed sculpture of a Mercedes V12 engine made from 53 different materials.

Made possible by a Cda Projects Grant, the sculpture represents an imagined dynamic between German technology and North African ingenuity.

Over nine months, each individual constituent part of a dismantled Mercedes V12 engine was sent to one of thirty five master craftsmen from various regions of Morocco who recreated them in different locally sourced materials before the engine was reassembled.

What materials, you ask?

…white cedar wood, high Atlas red cedar wood, walnut wood, lemon wood, orange wood, ebony wood of Macassar, mahogany wood, thuya wood, Moroccan beech wood, pink apricot wood, mother of pearl, yellow copper, nickel plated copper, red copper, forged iron, recycled aluminum, nickel silver, silver, tin, cow bone, goat bone, malachite of Midelt, agate, green onyx, tigers eye, Taroudant stone, sand stone, red marble of Agadir, black marble of Ouarzazate, white marble of Béni Mellal, pink granite of Tafraoute, goatskin, cowskin, lambskin, resin, cow horn, rams horn, ammonite fossils of the Paleozoic from Erfoud, Ourika clay, geometric terra cotta with vitreous enamel (zellige), green enamel of Tamgrout, paint, cotton, argan oil, cork, henna, and rumex.

TLDR: It’s like that episode of Futurama where Bender remakes himself in wood.

NASA sez:

What would it look like to fly through the distant universe? To find out, a team of astronomers estimated the relative distances to over 5,000 galaxies in one of the most distant fields of galaxies ever imaged: the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF). Because it takes light a long time to cross the universe, most galaxies visible in the above video are seen when the universe was only a fraction of its current age, were still forming, and have unusual shapes when compared to modern galaxies. No mature looking spiral galaxies such as our Milky Way or the Andromeda galaxy yet exist. Toward the end of the video the virtual observer flies past the furthest galaxies in the HUDF field, recorded to have a redshift past 8. This early class of low luminosity galaxies likely contained energetic stars emitting light that transformed much of the remaining normal matter in the universe from a cold gas to a hot ionized plasma.

art-deco-motorcycleart-deco-motorcycle-2 art-deco-motorcycle-3art-deco-motorcycle-5 art-deco-motorcycle-4 A meticulously restored Henderson Streamlined concept bike owned and maintained by motorcycle collector Frank Westfall of Syracuse and looking as if transported intact from the golden age of industrial aerodynamics.

The Antique Motorcycle Club Of America sez:

The hallmarks of the era were unbroken curves, teardrop shapes and parallel lines suggesting speed. In addition to cars, trains and other things that actually moved, these design elements showed up in streamlined toasters, streamlined radios and streamlined cigarette lighters. Even the Chrysler and Empire State buildings, finished in 1930 and 1931 respectively, feature sleek, pointed peaks and dominant vertical lines from bottom to top, like great rockets ready to streak into the heavens.

Henderson, which operated for just ten years between 1921 and 1931, was one of the original ‘big three’ US bike manufacturers, along with Harley Davidson and Indian.

Youtuber ‪João Guimarães‬ captures the amazing skills of a firefighting chopper pilot as he makes the first two of 25 refills at a neighbour’s swimming pool in Portugal, a legal last resort in wildfire situations. João sez:

…he was returning to the airfield from another bushfire when he saw the initial smoke column. He took the initiative to land and start the attack on his own since the fire was so close to houses. He made about 25 refills at the swimming pool, and this bucket carries about 600 liters, if I remember correctly. The swimming pool level lowered not even 40 cm after the mission. The helicopter left when the first firetruck arrived, the fire having already been extinguished.

Another angle here.
