We’re missing one.

The President of the High Court has freed four water charge protesters after upholding a challenge to the legality of a committal warrant grounding their detention.

The challenge related to errors in the committal warrant and not to the court hearing which led to their lawful conviction, Mr Justice Nicholas Kearns stressed. He will give a full judgment later explaining his reasons for his ruling.

More as we get it.

Meet Brighid and Paddy.

They’re almost 50 years married and live in Dundalk, Co. Louth.

They say…

Brighid: “Hello, I’m Brighid.”

Paddy: “And I’m Paddy. We are voting for equal marriage, we hope you will vote with us.”

Brighid: “We’re from Dundalk, we’re Roman Catholics and we’ll be 50 years married this year. We wish other couples – gay or straight – could legally avail of civil marriage and have the opportunity to experience the love, protections and companionship that we have experienced.”

Paddy: “Twenty years ago, I probably would have voted ‘No’, but now that I know gay people and see the love and joy they can bring to life, I will be voting ‘Yes’. We worked hard for civil rights in Northern Ireland in the Sixties. Now it is time to support civil rights in the South.”

Brighid: “We’re grandparents and we wish that all our grandchildren are protected and treated as equals, in the playground and in the eyes of the law.”

Paddy: “I ask you to take time to consider and reflect on something. It could happen sometime in the future, that your son or daughter, grandchild, or great-grandchild will tell you they are gay. And when they asked you how they voted in this referendum, or whether you bothered to vote at all, what will you tell them? Will you tell them that you tried to make a difference?”

Brighid: “We have the opportunity to change things, for the better. I know that the ever-loving god that we believe in will say, we did the right thing and the Christian thing by voting yes for marriage equality.”

Paddy: “We ask you to vote with us.”

Silent but deadly.

de Pater and his team used the Keck telescope to observe Uranus and saw clouds that were very high up. The astronomers were able to infer the thickness and height of the clouds in the atmosphere, as well as their composition. As the clouds rose higher, methane gas condensed into methane ice to make them glow so brightly that even amateur astronomers could view them from Earth.

Big-Game

What you may need to know:

1. When Air Force One is shot down over Finland (wait, doesn’t Air Force One have anti-missile defence systems?), the US President (Samuel L. Jackson) jettisons in an escape pod (wait… oh, forget it). As he is hunted down by terrorists, his only ally is 13-year old bow-carrying tyke Oskari (Onni Tommila).

2. More planes; no snakes.

3. In terms of “will work for cash,” Samuel L. Jackson is giving Michael Caine’s 1980s  a run for its money. But Jim Broadbent really should know better.

4. Big Game is the second feature from director Jalmari Helander, and is the most expensive movie ever produced in Finland. Having said that, the €8.5 million budget probably wouldn’t cover craft services on Pirates of the Caribbean.

5. It may look as dumb as a bag of hammers, but Big Game is a nostalgic throwback to the 1980s kid-friendly action movie, and has been getting some pretty decent reviews.

6. Broadsheet Prognosis: A guilty pleasure. Very, very guilty.

This fireplace was stolen from a house in Rathgar, Dublin 6 during a break-in on February 20.

The house was being renovated at the time.

A ‘gutted’ Tom Magee writes:

“I know you don’t normally do this… But trying to locate this fireplace – decent reward offered.”

Counter productive.

Or counter intuitive?

YOU decide.

Judith Goldberger writes:

So Fergus Finlay admits the billboards for his Diageo funded ‘Out Of Control Drinking’ campaign were created by UK based Goddard Global, the same guys who lobby for the tobacco industry. Nice industry to be hanging out with given they are threatening to sue the Irish government.

Then again, maybe they’re the right people to be hanging with as after all the tobacco industry know all about designing intentionally ineffective adverts which create the illusion of responsibility but are either counter-productive or go towards actually promoting their product.

Fight!
