It’s an honour to work for the state,
And while the pay ain’t always great,
Generations have found,
Their jobs safe and sound,
And you know that the cash won’t be late.

ofMichael O’Flynn

Last night, Cork property developer Michael O’Flynn was interviewed by Paschal Sheehy on the Six One News about losing control of his business to Blackstone, a US company which had purchased Mr O’Flynn’s loans from NAMA.

He said the following:

I was shocked. My intention was absolutely to work collaboratively with Blackstone. It has always been my policy, whoever local authorities, State agencies, the IDA. Whether you borrow a million, ten million or 1.8 billion it’s always about did you borrow responsibly? And I can tell you Paschal we have always borrowed responsibly. Of course we have had situations where there has been an extraordinary collapse in price, in value and no more than a householder who bought a house and is in negative equity. Like, are they responsible for the negative equity that they find themselves in? We have done our business right. We have always tried to do our business in a proper fashion, we will continue to do so.

Michael O’Flynn featured in RTÉ’s Prime Time documentary ‘Carry On Regardless’ in December 2010 about the lifestyle of Irish property developers in NAMA, where he was filmed flying by helicopter with his family to Down Royal from his Cork home to watch his racehorse finish third.

Mr O’Flynn also received a reported €50,000 from Lucinda Creighton in a defamation case in the High Court in 2012, part of which he donated to Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin.

Fair play though, in fairness.

A visualisation of Earth’s first geologic eon – four billion years ago – named after the Greek god Hades on account of the ‘hellish’ cratered, magma-strewn conditions that prevailed when the first pre-biotic compounds formed.

Lyonya Shilovsky performs the Galop Infernal from Jacques Offenbach’s Orpheus In The Underworld with the Novosibirsk Symphony Orchestra, then rounds it off with a nifty solo.

Soon he will learn to give the crowd the finger and leave the stage swigging on a bottle of Chivas Regal.

Ireland’s Robert Heffernan competing at the European Championships in Barcelona, 2010

Robert finished fourth in both the 20km and 50km walking races at the European Championships in Barcelona in 2010. Russia’s Stanilov Emlyanov won the 20km title but his medal has now been taken off him due to irregularities in his biological passport. Robert will now receive the bronze medal.

Meanwhile, Ian O’Riordan, in the Irish Times, recalls:

Last month, Athletics Ireland began seeking the European Indoor bronze medal now due to Roisín McGettigan after Russia’s Anna Alminova was also banned retrospectively for a doping offence.

Alminova won the 1,500 metres at the European Indoors in Turin back in 2009, with McGettigan finished a close fourth. Alminova was stripped of all performances from February 2009, as well as being handed a 30-month suspension, due to irregularities in her biological passport.

Derval O’Rourke is also due a bronze medal from the 60 metre hurdles at last year’s European Indoors in Gothenburg, after gold medal winner Nevin Yanit from Turkey was also later handed a two-year ban.

This changes everything.

The EU Commission writes:

“There are only a few minutes before your flight check-in closes, or before your train departs, but you now have to spend precious time hunting for a free space at the airport or station car park. Imagine leaving your vehicle at the main entrance and letting the car do the rest on its own. Researchers from Germany, Italy, the UK and Switzerland are working on this, and successful tests took place at Stuttgart airport earlier this year. €5.6 million of EU funding is invested in the system which will be available in the coming years.”

“Drivers will be able to leave their car in front of the car park and use a smartphone app to trigger the parking process. The vehicle will connect with the car park’s server and drive itself to the designated space. While in the garage, the car can also be programmed to go to a charging station. Upon returning, the driver uses the same app to summon the car – fully charged and ready to go.”
