Janet’s Saturday Jam Scones.

Reader Janet writes:

Every Saturday we would bake up for Sunday and the week, we weren’t allowed bake on a Sunday, I have been making these since I was a wee wan and never really measure anymore, but Mother says these are right…

You’ll need:

Ilb of self raising flour,
4oz marg or butter ( depends who’s coming for tea)
3oz sugar
1 well beaten egg
Either milk or butter milk if you have it (roughly half pint)

How to:

Rub butter into flour until like fine breadcrumbs, add sugar, add beaten egg with milk (add milk slowly don’t drown the miller!) Shape gently into a ball and flatten slightly on a floured work top, cut out rounds, you can use a cleaned and floured jam jar of you don’t have fancy cutters

Chuck in sultanas or cherries if you want to,

Hot oven for ten minutes,

Serving suggestions:

Clotted cream and Mum’s homemade jam/jelly ;)

If you were present along a narrow path between Chile and Argentina for the final New Moon of 2020 on December 14th last, you’d have seen the only total solar eclipse of the year. To wit:

Within about 2 days of perigee, the closest point in its elliptical orbit, the New Moon’s surface is faintly lit by earthshine in this dramatic composite view. The image is a processed composite of 55 calibrated exposures ranging from 1/640 to 3 seconds. Covering a large range in brightness during totality, it reveals the dim lunar surface and faint background stars, along with planet-sized prominences at the Sun’s edge, an enormous coronal mass ejection, and sweeping coronal structures normally hidden in the Sun’s glare. Look closely for an ill-fated sungrazing Kreutz family comet (C/2020 X3 SOHO) approaching from the lower left, at about the 7 o’clock position. In 2021 eclipse chasers will see an annular solar eclipse coming up on June 10. They’ll have to wait until December 4 for the only total solar eclipse in 2021 though. That eclipse will be total along a narrow path crossing the southernmost continent of Antarctica.

This morning/afternoon.

Some details surrounding the publication next week of the long-awaited report by Mother and Baby Homes Commission of Investigation have been released.

Via Tuam Mother and Baby Home Alliance:

Minister for Children, Disabilty, Equality and Integration Roderic O’Gorman has advised this morning that he will be bringing a Memorandum to Cabinet on Tuesday the 12th January as he intends to seek approval for the publication of the Final Report of the Commission of Investigation (Mother and Baby Homes and certain related matters) and the Commission’s Sixth Interim report.

On the same day, he will also bring a separate Memorandum seeking approval to proceed with the Certain Historic Burials (Authorised Interventions) Bill, which will allow for exhumation and dignified reburial of the remains interred at the site at Tuam. Pending Cabinet approval, the Bill will then proceed to pre-legislative scrutiny in the Oireachtas.

After the Cabinet meeting, An Taoiseach and Minister will host an online presentation for former residents and those directly affected  to outline some of the key findings from the Report, along with details of the initial Government response.  The Minister has provided details of how we can access the online webinar.  The webinar is not open to the media who will be afforded a separate briefing after the webinar has concluded.

Cathal Coughlan – Song Of Co-Aklan

She’s still trying to pronounce his name.

Former Microdisney and Fatima Mansions colossus Cathal Coughlan has dropped a new video on his YouTube channel.

Filmed with his band remotely, it’s another banger.

Welcome back!

Nick says: CC incidentally.

Keep your windows closed if you have not had a rona test, advise Gardai.

This afternoon.

People who are travelling to and from Covid-19 tests are being urged not to open their window if they are stopped at a garda checkpoint en route

Instead they should display their test appointment confirmation through the window.

Gardaí have said that at least five unmasked drivers who were on their way to a testing centre rolled down their windows to talk to gardaí at one checkpoint near Ashbourne in Co Meath yesterday.

‘Desert Island Golden Discs’.

A playlist of the 2020 winners of my weekly Golden Discs voucher competition.

Compiled by Andy Pikin, who writes:

The Broadsheet community came up with thousands of brilliant suggestions, resulting in a brilliant playlist ever week. With some of the results more controversial then the US election.

So enjoy 2020’s playlist of the winners…

An incredible diverse and eclectic mixture of music, but brilliant at the same time.

A playlist that amazingly enough only has one artist getting two songs on the list, the brilliant Townes Van Zandt!

Thanks to too everyone who contributes every week, I’ve learned a lot of new/old music and some brilliant videos. I remember someone saying it’s like been in the pub on a Friday with your mates talking about music, and that’s exactly how I feel!

Thank You Nick! And Thank you Golden Discs for their continued support for Irish artists and this competition!! And thank you all.

Thank you, Andy!

The voucher competition will return next week.
