This afternoon.

Nobby Stiles, World Cup winner with England and European Cup winner with Manchester United, has died at 78.

Nobby was married for 57 years to Catherine ‘Kay’ Giles (they had three children), having met her through her brother John, when they were fellow young recruits at Old Trafford.

RIP.

A statement issued last night by Department of Justice and Equality concerning a USB key containing sensitive data relating to the Hickson Commission, which is investigating paedophile Waterford basketball coach Bill Kenneally (top).

The key, which the department says was encrypted (meaning only authorised parties can decipher the content), was apparently lost as it was moved between two government departments.

In 2016, Kenneally was given a 14-year sentence for sexually abusing ten boys aged between 12 and 16 in the years between 1984-1987.

The public inquiry headed by retired Circuit Court judge Barry Hickson was set up in 2108 following claims that Fianna Fáil, the Gardai, the HSE and the Catholic Church knew of the abuse but did nothing.

The Sewing Room – Forewarned

Continuing our series of underrated Irish music since 1960 (unearthed during a recent Golden Discs music competition), I chose 1990s Dublin indie troupe The Sewing Room who were once memorably described by Hot Press journalist Niall Crumlish as sounding “like death cooled down”. In a good way!

Singer/guitarist Eamonn Davis had previously been in Hey Paulette and was most recently seen playing bass in Eileen Gogan’s band The Instructions.

Lead guitarist Stan Erraught had shone in The Stars Of Heaven and drummer Dez Foley went on to join Crumb, The Drays and Acton Bell.

They released two critically acclaimed albums And Nico (top) and Sympathy For The Dishevelled and the Drug Free EP.

For an all too brief time, The Sewing Room had us in stitches.

Nick says: Knitrock.

Behold: the stars at the centre of our Milky Way galaxy imaged by the Dark Energy Camera at the Cerro Tololo observatory in Chile.

The first image, while vast, shows a mere 10 million of the estimated 100-400 billion stars of the Milky Way, which is only one one of an estimated 2 trillion galaxies in the Universe.

David Quinn (top) has blocked Anthony Sheridan (above) on Twitter

Recently, militant Catholic David Quinn blocked me on Twitter. Mr. Quinn was defending the reputation of the Catholic Church[CC].

Here’s the text of my ‘offending’ tweet:

Wrong. The CC is global and Ireland was a particularly good breeding ground for brutal priests and nuns who obeyed orders without question.

I’m an atheist so it might be thought a block was to be expected but in fact myself and Quinn have engaged in various twitter discussions over a number of years without a block in sight.

His decision to block me is all the more puzzling because just nine days later he wrote an article in the Sunday Times extolling his virtues of tolerance.

He was writing about a matter of which both of us are in full agreement, the hilariously stupid decision of the Trinity College Historical Society to cancel an invitation to atheist Richard Dawkins to speak at the college.

Quinn strongly believes, as I do, that Dawkins should not have been banned, that free speech, no matter how controversial, is paramount.

To demonstrate his unlimited respect for free speech Quinn quoted some views held by Dawkins.

That raising a child as a Catholic can be compared to sexual abuse.

That the Catholic Church is a disgusting institution.

That the god of the Old Testament is a genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.

Obviously, Quinn does not agree with these views but, because of his [apparent] respect for freedom of speech he’s prepared to defend Dawkins’ right to express them.

The decision by the Trinity Historical Society to cancel Dawkins’ speech was, according to Quinn:

Another example of cancel culture, which seeks to deprive people of platforms when their views are deemed offensive to certain groups.

So why, I ask, did Quinn ‘cancel culture’ me from his twitter link for making a relatively benign [and truthful] comment?

Hypocrisy, I suspect, is the answer. In public Quinn pretends to be a hero of tolerance while in private he deletes those who challenge his beliefs, just as his Catholic Church has been doing for centuries.

From top: Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò (right) and US President Donald Trump (left); A new letter to Trump from Archbishop Viganò

Last night/this morning.

Following his open letter in June claiming the rona represented a worldwide spiritual battle between the forces of good and evil, Vatican whistleblower Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò has written again to US President Donald Trump.

The former Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, whose allegations about Pope Francis protecting child sex offender Cardinal Theodore McCarrick broke during the Papal visit to Ireland, warns that the Great Reset is a pretext for the “establishment of a New World Order” and stresses  “the epochal importance of the imminent election”.

A vital message?

Or tin foil zucchetto senza senso?

Only YOU can decide.
