wish-2 wish-6 wish-5 wish-4 wish-3

WISH: a public art project for the Belfast Festival at the Titanic Quarter by Cuban-American artist Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada.

After several years of planning, the portrait of an anonymous Belfast girl was plotted on a grid using GPS, set out with 30,000 hand placed stakes and created  over four weeks with over 3600 tonnes of soil, sand and rock.

Viewable in full only from the air, the piece – which will remain in place for the rest of the year – has already been nicknamed ‘The Face from Space’.

teenage-pregnancy

A pharmacy project aimed at reducing teenage pregnancy has been launched in north and west Belfast. Community pharmacies will provide sexual health advice and, if needed, free emergency contraception to girls and young women aged from 16 to 19. It is a joint project from the Public Health Agency (PHA) and Health and Social Care Board (HSCB).

Dr Jillian Johnston from the PHA said: “The Public Health Agency wants to improve access to sexual health services for teenage women, particularly in areas of deprivation, and improve the sexual health of young people. She said young women could already access emergency contraception in pharmacies, but some may not be able to afford it. “There is a charge associated with it and that has been shown to be prohibitive, especially for young women.”

Deirdre Quinn from the HSCB said “As well as offering timely access to emergency contraception, the pharmacist will use each opportunity to discuss other issues relating to sexual health, including the risks of unprotected sex and the importance of long-term contraception.”

sandyrow

Adenike Yisa, who has two children, was lying on her sofa in the Sandy Row area, at 02:00 on Wednesday, when she heard a loud noise.

A hatchet smashed the livingroom window of her home and landed beside her on the floor. “Seriously, I thought it was gunshots,” she said, adding that all she could do was scream at the top of her voice. “I was so terrified for my children. “I don’t know how someone could be so bitter towards someone…to do something so terrifying to your fellow human being. I don’t know how they’ve been brought up or raised. “Someone shouldn’t be feeling this way. It’s a very bad feeling,” she said, speaking of her fear.

Woman

The Belfast Telegraph is reporting that a “woman was caught striking a series of lewd poses at a famous beauty spot”, namely Cave Hill, Belfast.

It reports:

“One rambler told the Belfast Telegraph that the blonde was doing “typical glamour modelling poses – nothing tasteful”.

“Now Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland has called for Belfast City Council to investigate.

“One witness said that he had been sitting down for a rest at around 2.30pm when he noticed what was going on.

“I was sitting drinking my juice and eating my Turkish Delight when what caught my eye was this girl with long blonde hair and a bright pink tracksuit and pink shoulder bag,” he said.

“I thought that looks really odd, it’s not the way you would come up Cave Hill.

“There was a guy behind her, he had a grey bag with what looked like camera equipment.

“They went on up the path, he appeared to be getting his camera equipment out, then she took her gear off. She was posing on a rock and all sorts of poses, glamour sort of stuff.

“I couldn’t see any detail from where I was but it was obvious it wasn’t anything tasteful. She climbed up into the cave at one point, legs splayed out.”

Yikes.

A mural of soccer legend George Best is being replaced by a painting of a UVF gunman and the quote ‘Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed‘ in Sydenham, East Belfast.

The Best mural was created in 2010 with the help of Belfast City Council’s Peace III project with a grant of £1,500 to cover materials which itself, replaced a UVF mural at the time.
