Anyone?

jimmyDublin sliothar-stopping legend Jimmy Grey.

He was in the wrong sport in the wrong town.

John Gallen writes

Dublin hurler, Jimmy Grey, was goalkeeper the last time they won the Leinster Hurling Final’s Bob O’Keefe Cup in 1961. He had these words to say cheerfully on [RTE’s] Six One News this evening.

“The attitude in Dublin would have been largely, be football, whether soccer, rugby or gaelic football and hurling was seen as kind of a, a culchie game. To some extent, way back. And as a consequence only one Dublin born player*, as you probably know, ever won an all Ireland medal.”

Lovely man. Being a culchie myself and from Galway, living in Dublin, I look forward to extending those 52 years a little further on Sunday.

* I have no idea who that player I should probably know was :/

Mulvey_Lorcan_London_celebrations2013The illuminati’s remorseless conquest continues.

Members of London GAA club after progressing to their first ever Connacht Football Championship final.

They will play Mayo on July 21.

But where?

Emmet Keane writes:

This is truly historic and, away from the buffonery of inviting the Queen to throw in the ball, gives Ireland a genuine chance to connect to its emigrant population, many of which came from the West.

An Spailpín Fánach writes:

Firstly, the Connacht Council should get on the phone to the London Board and find a stadium to host the Connacht Final. They have three weeks, which is loads of time to cut a deal with one of the twenty stadia in London that have capacities of more than 10,000.

This wouldn’t be cheap, of course, but in this year of The Gathering it would be interesting to see if the Government is willing to put its money where its mouth is and underwrite the operation.

…Why go to the trouble? Because we, the nation, owe the Irish in London. We owe them big-style down the years and now that a unique opportunity has arisen, where an English team is playing a high-profile match in the most Irish of entities, the All-Ireland Championship, that gives us an opportunity to celebrate, remember and look forward.

This is a chance for a second Polo Grounds [GAA ground in Upper Manhattan], and if it’s not grabbed it will be gone. But it’ll be bigger than the Polo Grounds in its way, because the Irish were always welcome in America. They were not always welcome in England – no blacks, no Irishmen, no dogs, as the signs often said.

We may recall last week’s preparations at Eastpoint Business Park?

Well, Westmeath literally beat off {sides from] eight other counties to win the first Red Bull Cúl 5…

…a pop-up five-a-side tournament using “an adapted version of the game” and played inside a specially built 50 x 30m pitch.

Niall Bouzon writes:

Finally got our video up on YouTube. Hope you would be willing to share it. Its a cool project. We are trying to get a five-a-side gaelic football game going in Ireland. It is something that could be played anywhere, in any part of the country. The hope is to keep people playing GAA. We also turned an urban waste land into a pretty cool pitch.
