British Lord Jonathan Sumption has served as a Justice of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom

This afternoon.

Via Irish Legal News:

Lord Sumption has admitted that he stopped obeying the coronavirus regulations when they began “reaching levels of absurdity”.

Speaking to legal journalist Joshua Rozenberg QC (hon.), the former Supreme Court justice said he did not accept that there was a “moral obligation to comply with the law”.

In an online discussion hosted by Prospect Magazine, he said: “I certainly think that if you don’t comply with the law you cannot complain if you are fined. But are you committing a moral offence? I think not.”

Mr Rozenberg responded: “You’ve just said to me you stopped complying with the law at some point, perhaps by going out?”

“I decided that I was no longer going to comply with some aspects of the law at a relatively late stage when it seemed to me to be reaching levels of absurdity,” Lord Sumption said.

Later…

The host asked him, however, whether he thought he had “a duty to not only uphold the law but set an example to others by obeying the law”.

While he agreed that this was true in some respects, he remarked that “as a former Supreme Court judge I am simply a citizen and they have a platform but I have no juridical obligations by virtue of what I no longer do”.

Lord Sumption also warned that the global response to the pandemic may threaten democracy.

He noted that advocates of human rights “have been extraordinarily silent” about the lockdown and said that it is when populations cede liberty – as they have during the coronavirus crisis – that despots come to power.

“I would accept that the majority probably favour the lockdown but that is, I’m afraid, how despotisms arise…[More at link below]…

Masked Taoiseach Micheál Martin arrives for a cabinet meeting in Dublin Castle.

He has warned that the planned full reopening of pubs on July 20 could be delayed because of SHOCKING scenes like the one in pic 2 in Dublin on Saturday.

Via RTÉ

Micheál Martin said the Government is worried about scenes in Dublin over the weekend where social distancing and, in some cases, opening hours were not being complied with.

He said:

“We have to put public health first. That is the overarching issue. The only way we can get the economy back is if we keep Covid-19 down. Any change to this would be a disaster for the country.

“There is an obligation on everyone to behave.”

You behave.

A nationwide campaign is launched to “resuscitate the Irish yoga industry” ahead of World Yoga Day this Sunday.

It is estimated that more than 300,000 people practice yoga regularly in Ireland.

Colm Walsh, of Yoga Dublin, writes:

The Association of Irish Yoga Studios was recently formed to get Ireland’s yoga studios back open, and to keep an industry that was thriving just a few months ago, viable in the future.

They are highlighting that the higher VAT rate for individual service providers has been erroneously applied to yoga studios which are businesses which have fixed overheads, running purpose designed facilities with associated costs, rates, insurance and staff wages.

Unlike yoga studios, gyms had their incorrect classification rectified in 2012.

Several yoga studios have closed permanently since April, and the Minister of Finance must act now to save the rest of the yoga industry in Ireland.

Yoga studios have never been properly VAT classified and this incorrect VAT rate is crippling them as facility providers.
