Horinouchi House in Tokyo, Japan, a very modestly sized (56 m³) house that makes the most of its tiny footprint, designed by Mizuishi Architect Atelier. To wit:

Slightly reminiscent of a submarine’s periscope, the Horinouchi House’s triangular-shaped exterior allows it to fit snugly into its modest plot of land. Inside, the home is spacious and incredibly well lit, succeeding in making it feel much larger than it actually is. Its lower level houses a master bedroom and bathroom, along with a kitchen and dining room, while the upstairs quarters are primarily reserved for communal activities — think a den or living room.

A logarithmic depiction of the known universe by musician and artist Pabloi Carlos Budassi using deep space photographs collected from NASA pieced together to form a map where each consecutive ‘ring’ represents several orders of magnitude further than the adjacent one nearer the centre.

The image was inspired and informed by similar (but less impressive) images created at Princeton University in 2005.

Giant version here.

The ‘CJ5 House’ – an innovative, inward-looking residence maximising the Floor Area Ratio (FAR = 1.0) of a 5m x 35m side on the outskirts of Vienna by filling the entire site.

Designed by Caramel Architekten, the peaks and troughs of the roofline  create a series of levels and voids for the interlocking rooms and enclosed courtyard beneath. Heavy insulation, heat pump and photovoltaics make the house virtually independent from the grid.

And the neighbours.
