The memorial left for victims of the Library Gardens apartment balcony collapse

We’re Irish. We stick together, when we encounter each other far from home. Back in Ireland, we might have all sorts of issues with each other, as any family does, from time to time. Abroad, it’s different. Abroad, we’re a family. The affinities are clearer. They’re low-key important.

I really hope it has changed but In my experience no one treats the Irish worse abroad than the Irish….

My pal Jo Halpin, currently travelling around South America, sent me this nice clip of a group of Irish people at Salar de Uyuni, (the world’s largest salt flat)Bolivia sending home their support for the upcoming referendum. Nice to see a yes vote on the horizon….

The Snug bar, Melbourne last night.

Marcus Byrne writes:

“I am Irish and have been living in Australia for about 10 years. Last night, on a wet and windy evening [it’s Winter] on the busy Sydney Road in Brunswick, Melbourne, we were having a few pints in a tiny Irish bar, The Snug. The guys from ‘Legend Of Luke Kelly’ and Paddy Casey popped in and treat the punters to some classic songs from their repertoire. In old Irish tradition, chairs were arranged in a circle and  were treated to many hours of Irish trad classics. Paddy belted out ‘Saints and Sinners’ and at request, ‘Sweet Suburban Sky’. Chris Kavanagh, as Luke Kelly finished off the evening with Scorn Not His Simplicity. Micheal and Kim, who opened The Snug only a few years ago were the perfect hosts. Evenings like this are few and far between and I just wanted to share it with you. Also singer songwriter Roesy [in denim jacket] is in the middle of a crowd funding campaign for his new album Wolf Counsel.  It would be great to let the Irish Population know about this if possible….’

horse

We’ve all been there.

In fairness.

“A Drunk Irishman who punched a police horse twice while wearing only his underwear and one sock has been placed on a good behaviour bond with no conviction recorded.
…Today in sentencing submissions, [Colm] Keogh’s lawyer, Con O’Neill, said he had been at a Christmas party earlier in the evening at the Hilton Hotel — but “not the posh Hilton”, his lawyer said, the one on South Rd.
Mr O’Neill said his client remembered getting in a taxi then finding himself on Hindley St in his underwear and wearing one sock, “sleeping it off”

It’s worth repeating.

Why do all the good ones go?

WHY?

Man only wearing underwear and one sock when he attacked a police horse in Hindley St, court hears (CourierMail))

patrick(Finland’s Patrick O’Shaughnessy, on knees, being sent off last night during a England Vs Finland Under 21s Euro qualifier in Milton Keynes)

David Powell writes:

Browsing the sports news this morning before doing literally anything else, as you do, and noticed that England U-21s beat Finland U-21s in a European qualifier in Milton Keynes (exciting!). Quick look at the report and this catches my eye: “Finland were then reduced to 10 men when Patrick O’Shaughnessy saw red.”
According to Wikipedia, our Patrick is “the son of an Irish painter” and he has a brother who plays for Metz in France. So there.

UPDATE: Still technically eligible to play for Ireland (see comments).
