Repurposing an opportunistic theft into a nifty promo, Cillian de Burca writes:

Conradh na Gaeilge have started our evening Irish classes again this week, and had a large banner made up earlier this month to advertise them. Our CCTV had some interesting footage this morning though – these lads must have been keen to get in touch and register…

An Irish priest jailed for stealing up to $100,000 from a Florida parish to spend in Las Vegas is back in Ireland – and is saying Mass here. Father Francis Guinan (71) told The Star he is “helping out” at the church in Eglish, Co. Offaly. And the cleric – who served more than three years in prison – added “I have put in my time…I have a clean slate.”

MAUREEN WALLACE BREEDING TORTOISES AT HOME

A man has been jailed for nine months for stealing a tortoise and a homeless man’s mobile phone. David Weir took the tortoise from a Belfast pet store and sold it for £60 to feed his alcohol addiction, Belfast Magistrates’ Court heard. The tortoise, valued at £250, was stolen in August last year.

A defence lawyer told the court it was fit and well the last time Weir saw it. However, it was accepted that the defendant did not know where it was now. Judge Perry said that it could not have got very far.
