Germany will stop paying compensation to unvaccinated workers who are forced into quarantine by coronavirus measures as it is unfair to ask taxpayers to subsidise those who refuse to get inoculated, Health Minister Jens Spahn said on Wednesday.

The rules, which will be implemented by the governments of Germany’s 16 federal states, will take effect by Oct. 11 at the latest, Spahn said, confirming the details of a draft document seen earlier by Reuters.

…..Critics have said such rules would be equivalent to a mandate for COVID-19 vaccinations because many workers cannot afford to stay at home without pay.

Thousands of health workers across France have been suspended without pay for failing to get vaccinated against Covid-19 ahead of a deadline this week, Health Minister Olivier Veran said Thursday.

“Some 3,000 suspensions were notified yesterday to employees at health centres and clinics who have not yet been vaccinated,” Veran told RTL radio.

He added that “several dozens” had turned in their resignations rather than sign up for the jabs.

That compares with 2.7 million health workers overall, Veran said, adding that “continued healthcare is assured”.

President Emmanuel Macron gave staff at hospitals, retirement home workers and the fire service an ultimatum in July to get at least one shot by September 15 or face unpaid suspension.

Many nurses in particular have been reluctant to get vaccinated, citing safety or efficacy concerns, posing the risk that France’s inoculation drive could stall.

Among the steps the President will take is signing an executive order requiring all federal workers be vaccinated against Covid-19, with no option of being regularly tested to opt out of the requirement, according to a source familiar with the plans.

The President will also sign an executive order directing the same standard be extended to employees of contractors who do business with the federal government. The Department of Defense, the Department of Veterans Affairs, Indian Health Service and National Institutes of Health will also complete their previously announced vaccination requirements, which the White House estimates covers 2.5 million workers.

Brian O’Doherty,  President of the Irish Primary Principals Network (IPPN)

This morning.

The President of the Irish Primary Principals Network (IPPN) says allowing unvaccinated, asymptomatic confirmed close contacts return to the classroom would be a cause for concern, particularly in the context of increasing cases in schools and the challenges being presented to school leaders.

Brian O’Doherty said pressures are emerging because, in some cases, principals are being called upon to make judgement calls without the benefit of public health advice when a positive covid case is identified in a school.

Speaking on Today with Claire Byrne, Mr O’Doherty explained when a Covid case is notified to the school, the school begins a process that involves undertaking a risk assessment to identify close contacts.

Philip Nolan, Chair of the NPHET Irish Epidemiological Modelling Advisory Group

This morning.

Via RTÉ News:

People are being urged to come forward for a Covid-19 vaccine to help overcome the spread of the Delta variant.

The chair of the National Public Health Emergency’s Team’s Epidemiological Modelling Advisory Group Philip Nolasn said while Ireland is well on target to have over 90% of the population vaccinated by the middle of September, “we have not yet reached the level of vaccine protection that we would like to have“.

He said that since April there were almost 200 admissions to ICUs, three quarters of which were among people who were not vaccinated.

Prof Nolan said that 19 out of 20 of these patients had no vaccination or were partially vaccinated and the vast majority were eligible for vaccination.

He said only 5% of those admitted to ICU were 14 days out from their second vaccine.

St Vincent’s hospital in Dublin is admitting a “worrying” number of double-vaccinated patients for treatment for Covid-19, emergency department head Professor John Ryan has said.

He emphasised that just because people are double-jabbed does not mean they are immune to the virus.

Right now, we’re seeing a significant number of breakthrough cases,” he said.
