Everything you needed to know about being a good Catholic wife in 1938 but were afraid to ask.

Your husband comes first in the house. His will should prevail. Therefore you belong to him more than to your parents (p. 23).

You are beginning a new life which you have entered through sacred doors. It was not a mere ceremony which took place before God’s altar. God’s hands were extended over you in blessing for the holy task which lies before you (p. 3)

And, in the context of the recent debate Ireland has had on abortion, here’s a section called ‘A Murderess’

When the mother’s life is endangered by the birth of the child, the life that is coming may not be destroyed. Even the doctor may not do this. He may do all that is possible to save the mother’s life except anything that would directly destroy the life of the child … Woe to the mother who is a murderess! (p. 26).

Good times.

steampunk

Like Steampunk?

Loathe British imperial-period ‘stuff’?

Talking to a friend a few days ago who is a sean scoil Steampunker I found him frustrated by the way the movement in Ireland is subsumed into the cod-Victoriana of the Pax Britannica, even by Irish adherences, with no distinctive identity of its own.

The conversation actually came about as part of a discussion relating to the Fenian fáinne Chladaigh and other 19th century Irish Republican memorabilia.

Recently he has moved towards the more welcoming environs of the Belle Époque and his Continental peers and it easy to see why. I’ve written a few unpublished stories in the Steampunk genre myself, using the struggle of the Fenian movement against the British colonial powers in the mid to late 1800s as the background…

Hardcore.

bottlerYour turn

From TV3’s Autumn/Winter schedule:

Bottler is an animation and live-action production set in 1960’s Dublin. Brendan Grace’s young Bottler character and his friends get involved in various adventures, some of which are closely tied to real historical events of the time. In this series of different stories told through the eyes of Bottler, viewers will be introduced to (or reacquainted with) famous Dublin characters of the time such as the rag & Bone man and Bang Bang. these stories expand upon Bottler’s world, show aspects of working class family life in dublin and the rich culture of the city from times past.
