shame

The No More Shame Project launches tonight in the Mariah Black Gallery in the Triskel Arts Centre, Tobin St, Cork. The project, led by Laura Kinsella, a researcher and activist media producer, and Liz Dunphy, journalist and filmmaker, aims to break the silence of the 12 women who leave Ireland daily to terminate pregnancies. “For too long a culture of silence has choked progress, ensuring continued legal barriers to basic reproductive rights,” says Dr Sandra McEvoy of the department of women’s studies at University College Cork.

First M&S.

Now this.

Piaras Kelly, who represents Superquinn and SuperValu writes;

Although the Superquinn name is changing, everything that people like about Superquinn will be maintained including products like the Superquinn sausage, food experts and the excellent customer service customers.

…SuperValu will invest €10 million to complete the refurbishment of the Superquinn store network. In addition to the €15 million invested over the past two years, the award winning SuperValu Own Brand range will be introduced, consisting of over 2,000 products priced at up to 33 per cent less than comparable brands.

…Superquinn stores will also become more actively involved in the community through initiatives such as the Tidy Towns and the GAA, both of which have a long term association with SuperValu.

This decision does not impact any of the 2,500 colleagues working in the Superquinn store network. As part of the name change, however, a number of functions in Superquinn will be integrated with SuperValu.

Regretfully this will impact 102 colleagues at Superquinn’s support office in Lucan, who will leave the business over the next 18 months. Every effort will be made to help them find positions across the wider SuperValu business, as well as providing out placement support to assist them in finding alternative employment.

otter

A rare enough, in fairness, otter sighting in The River Liffey at Dublin city.

Chippengael writes

Saw an otter in the Liffey on the way to work this morning with my son. must have been looking for the shoal of fish that we also spotted…

Willie Frazer visited the Dublin offices of Facebook yesterday to complain about the web page for a party he founded being removed. He said Facebook staff refused to take any documentation from him regarding the removal of the page for The Protestant Coalition.
Facebook explained to the News Letter that the page was taken down in error but had been reinstated since Sunday night.

“The Mater can’t carry out abortions because it goes against its ethos. I would be very concerned that the Minister [for Health, James Reilly] sees fit to make it impossible for hospitals to have their own ethos.”

Father Kevin Doran, a member of the board of governors at the Mater Hospital quoted  in today’s Irish Times.

Ethos, you say?

The three members of the board of Dublin’s Mater Hospital were key to the decision to stop trials of the drug for lung cancer patients.
They objected because female patients who get could get pregnant would have to take contraceptives under the treatment.
The subcommittee of the board – including  Fr Kevin Doran – were delegated the task of examining the conditions attached to testing the drug.

Ah, that kind of ethos.

What you may need to know.

1. Some people didn’t think the last Muppets flick was up to scratch. Some people are WRONG. It won Bret from Flight Of The Conchords a (well deserved) Oscar for Best Song.

2. Muppets Most Wanted is directed by James Bobin, who did the last one. It stars Ty Burrell, AKA Phil from Modern Family, who, truth be told, kind of looks like a muppet.

3. Ricky Gervais and movies. Not exactly a winning combination to date.

4. Expect the usual cameo fest: we’re hearing everyone from Tom Hiddleston and Christoph Waltz to Danny ‘Machete‘ Trejo and the godlike Peter Serafinowicz. He’s Graham Linehan’s brother in law, you know.

5. Yes, they go to Ireland. The only downside – it’s not out until next March.
