Miniature coding computers for others.

Google’s PR people do not go home early on a Bank Holiday Friday.

Oh no.

Google has announced a new partnership with Trinity College Dublin which it says will “radically change” the way computers are taught in Irish schools.

It will provide 1,000 teachers with miniature coding computers which Google says will help students learn the skills needed in the digital economy.

The internet giant is undertaking the partnership to mark 10 years in Ireland and will provide €1.5 million in funding to the project. It aims to affect a significant long-term change through “innovative educational interventions focused on the second-level system.

€1.5 million?

Imagine.

One and a half million Euros.

A Million.

And a half.

zimoun-5 zimoun-4 zimoun-5

A ‘sound installation’ inside an abandoned toluene tank in Dottikon, Switzerland by sound artist Zimoun, who (with a lot of help) installed329 DC motors connected to cotton balls to create this walk-in, thrumming, mesmeric perma-din. From Zimoun’s artist’s statement:

Using simple and functional components, Zimoun builds architecturally-minded platforms of sound. Exploring mechanical rhythm and flow in prepared systems, his installations incorporate commonplace industrial objects. In an obsessive display of simple and functional materials, these works articulate a tension between the orderly patterns of Modernism and the chaotic forces of life. Carrying an emotional depth, the acoustic hum of natural phenomena in Zimoun’s minimalist constructions effortlessly reverberates.

Obviously, to experience the full effect, you’d have to be there.

The man’s a genius. Here’s one he did earlier.

Niamh Molloy writes:

I would appreciate you sharing this. The authorities are attempting to remove the last green space in the centre of Istanbul and the response to the thousands of demonstrators has been tear gas, dawn raids and burning their tents.

People are protesting not only to save the park but also as a show of resistance to the government and the questionable decisions it has been known to make. It would be nice to show some support.
