The Chemin de fer de Petite Ceinture (‘Little Belt Railway’) in Paris, built in 1852, largely abandoned since 1935 (aside from one increasingly underused section), lovingly documented since 2011 by photographer Pierre Folk.

As local developers eyeball the land for new apartments and office blocks, Parisian railway enthusiasts want it preserved, possibly transformed into a series of urban parkways like the nearby Promenade Plantée which inspired New York’s High Line.

UK-based photographer Thom Atkinson’s series Soldiers’ Inventories – an attempt to explore “the mythology surrounding Britain’s relationship with war.”

With the help of historians, reenactment specialists, collectors and private soldiers, the series (featuring soldiers’ kits laid out and documented in detail here) span 948 years from Hastings to Helmand Province.

Above: typical soldier’s kit from the Battle of Hastings (1066), Siege of Jerusalem (1244), Agincourt (1415), Bosworth (1485), Malplaquet (1709), Arnhem (1944), The Falklands (1982), Helmand (2014).

ThereIsACity sez:

Once a year on august 1st, the people of Warsaw pay homage to the fallen heroes that fought for freedom in 1944 during the Warsaw Uprising. The biggest rebellion against German Nazi occupation during WWII cost over 200 000 lives and destruction of the capital.

When the Tokio Express freighter lost 62 containers after being hit by a freak wave 20 miles off Lands End in 1997,  4.8 million pieces of LEGO entered the sea.

Ironically, many of the sets were nautical-themed and bits and pieces have been washing up on the Cornwall coast (and occasionally Ireland and Wales too) for the last 17 years – collected competitively by aficionados and assiduously documented by the Facebook site Lego Lost At Sea.

Disneyland, California opened this week in 1955, but it would take decades for the park’s ‘imagineers’ to hone the trademark cute character cosplay from the nightmare-level costumes of the 50s, 60s and 70s.
