The window of Daintree Paper on Camden Street, Dublin 2
Zita Spring writes:
Just wanted to throw some love in the direction of Daintree Paper on Camden St, now under new management.
Former owner […] Paul Barnes generated negative publicity for Daintree last year because he refused to sell “any merchandise that promotes same-sex marriage” because of his Catholic beliefs. Barnes announced that he was selling the business a few months after that.
Now under new management, Daintree posted these pictures to their FB page this evening. The sample invites in the window display are for same-sex civil partnership ceremonies. Nice. I’m not affiliated with the shop, just really pleased to see this!

Rusty, brake-free Hercules.
Is there no bike they won’t nick.
Aibhe Cunningham writes:
“My bike was stolen on Tuesday night in Dublin [Bolton Street, outside the DIT building, beside the Dublin Bikes stand]…it’s s a woman’s city bike and has a few distinctive features: a half purple half green frame, the name HERCULES written down the crossbar and the pedals are filled in and have a rough dark grey material on them that looks like sandpaper. It has an old 3 gear system with an enclosed chain. (The chain is bright orange with rust right now) There is only one brake on the bike, the main brake system is operated by back pedaling. There was a bell on the bike when it was stolen. It is a silver bell and has an Iinsect incised onto the top of it. If anyone can suggest where I could be looking please let me know.”
Anyone?

Further to figures released today by the UK Department of Health.
Niall Behan of the Irish Family Planning Association writes:
“At least 3,679 women were forced to travel to the UK last year to access a safe and legal abortion because they are denied these necessary health services in their own country. Every day our clients tell us about their experiences of being abandoned by the Irish health care system and forced to rely on the services of another country.
“Since 1980, over 158,252 women have had to make the journey to the UK to access abortion. These women are not criminals but the law treats them as such because they are seeking a service that is illegal in almost every circumstance in Ireland.
“The criminalisation of abortion does not deter women from seeking an abortion but it does act as a barrier to receiving care. Abortion is the only other area of health where the Government can ignore its duty of care and shift the onus of seeking services onto women.”

‘Lunch in St. Stephen’s Green with uninvited guests…’
A second cover by Dublin comic-maker Sarah Bowie.
Sarah sez:
“I always start with rapid-fire sketching. I try to bypass the ‘thinking’ bit of my brain as much as possible at this stage, and see what comes out of nowhere. Eventually there’ll be one idea that ‘feels’ right, and I’ll work this up into a more finished drawing. I used to use pens a lot but I’ve started using 3b pencils again as I love the line variations and textures they give. I then scan everything in and colour digitally.”
