piroshpirosh
A letter sent by 24 year-old future screenwriter Robert Pirosh (1910 – 1989) to the directors and producers of Hollywood in 1934.

It landed him three interviews and a job as junior writer with MGM which led on to a gig writing for the Marx Brothers and, later, an Oscar for his script for Battleground in 1949.

Are you experiencing ‘issues’?

Ciara writes;

Just an FYI to all readers. AIB are having serious computer problems where [some] ATMs are not dispensing money to users yet the money is taken from their account…[some] Customers are also not able to use their debit/laser cards in stores….

Anyone?

Update:

An AIB spokeswoman writes:

AIB experienced some issues with AIB Debit Cards earlier today and this has now been resolved. AIB apologises to customers for any inconvenience caused.

.

The spokeswoman adds that NO customer will be out of pocket as a result and the problem was caused by a “third party provider”.

good vibrationsWe don’t know about you, but we had a GREAT year at the movies.

Best Irish Movie: Good Vibrations Plus Best Scene, to boot:

Most Outrageously Brilliant Thing We Saw All Year: The gonzo ‘Safe Haven‘ segment of horror anthology V/H/S 2, as directed by the guy (Gareth Evans) who did The Raid (2011). Watch it in full here – it’s seriously NSFW, borderline insane, and may mess you up:

Best Movie Everybody Hated But We (sort of) Liked: Only God Forgives. (NB: Drive is over-rated)

Future Cult Classic: The Lone Ranger. Fact.

The ‘What Happened’ Award: Danny Boyle’s Trance, AKA Pants.

Broadsheet Award For Outstanding Services To Cinema: The Rock. Brings it every time.

Best Irish Performance: Brendan Gleeson trying to muster enthusiasm for his role in Smurfs 2 (2013).

Best Irish Director: Paul Duane, who we’ve been telling you about for aaaaaaaaaaaaaaages. Don’t believe us? Ask Variety.

And the best thing you saw?

Listen To Wikipedia (created by Stephen la Porte and Mahmoud Hashemi) is an interactive webpage that tracks changes to Wikipedia entries in real time, representing each edit with a soothing melodic plunk (or ding) and a circle. To wit:

Bells indicate additions and string plucks indicate subtractions. Pitch changes according to the size of the edit; the larger the edit, the deeper the note. Green circles show edits from unregistered contributors, and purple circles mark edits performed by automated bots. You may see announcements for new users as they join the site, punctuated by a string swell.

Elisabetta and Francesca Grillo faced charges of defrauding Nigella Lawson and Charles SaatchiNigella Lawson and Charles Saatchi arrive at Isleworth Crown[From top: Elisabetta (left) and Francesca Grillo, cleared of theft, and their former employers “Nigella Lawson and Charles Saatchi}

It can now be reported that David Cameron’s “unprecedented” public backing for Nigella Lawson during the fraud trial of her former personal assistants came close to collapsing the case because it was considered “an abuse of process”. The prime minister had stunned lawyers when he gave a magazine interview in the middle of the jury trial, where he described the TV chef – the key prosecution witness – as a “very funny and warm person” and said he was “a massive fan”.
