A day after the platform was published without the recognition of Jerusalem, the line was reinstated. Pressure had been building over not only the dropping of that statement – which was part of the Democratic party platform in 2008 – but also the removal of any reference to God in the document. Those omissions threatened to alienate both Jewish Democratic supporters and Christian swing voters. But the reintroduction of the lines was equally controversial; its clumsy handling resulting in a confusing vote and booing on the convention floor.

I think the Ha’penny Bridge is the most iconic image of Dublin. Not only is it something that people recognise instantly, but people use it regularly and they enjoy using it. I can’t think of many Dublin icons that are as well loved and used by the locals. So it was fun to simplify it down to two colours and still keep it identifiable.

I’m Your Vinyl – Morning Comes Alive.

Dana and Ken write:

Here is a video we made for our new song called “Morning Comes Alive”. We got up early to shoot this one in The Phoenix Park [Dublin] using an iPhone. We’re playing The Stag’s Head Raw [upstairs at the Stag’s Head, Dame Court, Dublin] this Sunday [September 9], Doors 8pm.

Bad enough without this.

Brendan Lyons, from Skibereen, Co Cork, writes:

“One-morning-a-week housework was the only vacancy I spotted for Skibbereen in the Southern Star of September 1st. I looked at the CSO site myself. In July 2012 there were 789 men and 582 women available for work in the town.

It is demoralising for the unemployed, either long- or short-term. Demoralising also, because Skibbereen is a microcosm of the whole country.

More demoralising – no, let me be blunt – more degrading, is the 19th century practice of herding the vulnerable into a long line to “sign on”. For the most part, I imagine, they would prefer to have nails surgically removed without anaesthetic than this.

People do not like all and sundry knowing what they earn. Neither do I, but I might as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb: it is €95.70 a week. As someone who was self-employed for more than 20 years, this is what I now receive per week in State benefit.

I may as well shout it from the rooftops, because the second form of degradation visited on the unemployed is that the post office staff in Skibbereen, all of whom I have known for that same 20 years, are put in the embarrassing position of knowing what it is every unemployed person in the town earns. After all, they count every cent into their hands.”

Last Sunday, the nice people at Minnesota’s Black Bear Casino made the world’s biggest ever burger. The 3 metre wide patty, which had to be flipped with a crane, contained 27kg of bacon, 22kg of lettuce, 22kg of onions, 18kg of pickles and 18kg of cheese.

The monstrous one US short ton (0.914 tonne) health and safety nightmare was served up to onlookers.

Bill Clinton and President Obama embrace at the Democratic national Convention last night following a 45-minute speech/endorsement by the former president. Forty five minutes.

He made only a quick reference to his wife, drawing laughter from the crowd as he raised another attribute of Mr. Obama, declaring:
“Heck, he even appointed Hillary!” For Mr. Clinton, the speech dramatized the evolution in his relationship with Mr. Obama, from bitter antagonism to cautious embrace and now a full-throated endorsement. People who know both men do not play down the lingering tension between them, a legacy of the 2008 Democratic primary, when Mr. Obama defeated Mrs. Clinton in a fierce battle that seemed to leave Mr. Clinton more wounded than his wife.

“President Obama beat Hillary Clinton for the nomination,” said Rahm Emanuel, the mayor of Chicago, who worked for both “President Clinton loves his wife. It took him a little longer to get over it; she got a job.”

The reviews were conducted by the Catholic Church’s own child protection watchdog, the National Board for Safeguarding Children (NBSC). Its chief executive Ian Elliott, (above) who led the reviews, described the findings as “disappointing”.

Maeve Lewis, executive director of the One in Four group, said after publication of the findings yesterday it was “as if certain senior churchmen continue to believe that child protection procedures are optional, and they are above the law of the land”.

She said in some areas of the church it was “as if the Ferns, Ryan, Dublin and Cloyne reports had never happened”.
