‘[Javid] has turned down the job of chancellor of the exchequer. The prime minister said he had to fire all his special advisers and replace them with Number 10 special advisers to make it one team. The chancellor said no self-respecting minister would accept those terms.’
At top: The Øresund – that connects the Danish capital of Copenhagen to the Swedish city of Malmö – transitions from a bridge into a tunnel
Yesterday.
Boris Johnson is completely serious about building a bridge from Scotland to Northern Ireland to boost the union.
The PM has ordered officials in Whitehall to look at the project and whether it’s possible.
An artificial island around 2.5 miles long and 500 yards wide is likely to link the bridge to the tunnel.
Under one version of Boris’ plan, the bridge would run from the Scottish coast over the trench, before becoming a tunnel for the final stretch to Northern Ireland.
Local geography might even dictate the need for two artificial islands to span the North Channel.
A Whitehall source told The Sun:
“There were some people who thought the Channel Tunnel was a mad idea at the time. “We are looking at the feasibility of a bridge and if it could be made to work.”
The idea that you should just be polite and chatty with the people who have dragged your name through the mud only makes sense if you think this is just a game on the rugby fields of eton. https://t.co/JGUDUDAOPx
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson delivered a victory speech after his Conservative party yielded the best election result since 1987.
He said:
“Thank you all, thank you very much for coming. Well my friends, good morning everybody, my friends.
“Well, we did it, we did it. We pulled it off didn’t we?
“We pulled it off.
“We broke the deadlock, we ended the gridlock, we smashed the roadblock.
“And in this glorious, glorious pre-breakfast moment, before a new dawn rises on a new day and a new government, I want to first of all pay tribute to good colleagues who lost their seats through no fault of their own in the election just gone by.
“And I, of course, want to congratulate absolutely everybody involved in securing the biggest conservative majority, since the 1980s…which was, literally, literally, as I look around, literally before many of you were born.
“And with this mandate, and this majority, we will at last be able do…what?”
The crowds respond in chorus: “Get Brexit done.”
Mr Johnson then carried on:
“You’re paying attention.
“This election means that getting Brexit done is now the irrefutable, irresistible, unarguable decision of the British people…”
PM [Boris Johnson] putting down motion for a general election to be voted on on Monday, to take place on 12th December – No 10’s gambit is that if Labour agrees, then they will timetable Brexit bill again with time for scrutiny until 6th November when they want to dissolve Parliament.
