City of Meriens – a conceptual design for a floating oceanographic university conceived by Jacques Rougerie Architecture.
900m long, 500m wide and based on the anatomy of a Manta Ray, the floating ‘city’ will have hydroponic greehouses, bays for marine and submersible craft, accomodation for up to 7000 people, lecture halls, classrooms, laboratories, sports zones, living space and ‘cultural relaxation areas’.

Photographer and native New Yorker Vivienne Gucwa’s images of an eerily depopulated Big Apple during the much-hyped but ultimately uneventful non-blizzard earlier this week when all vehicles except snow ploughs and emergency vehicles were banned from the streets.

The denizens of Crowded amble through their ever-expanding habitat seemingly oblivious to their mutating landscape – while the voyeur sits back and inhales the swarming scenery. The convivial tone veils the dystopian message of the narrative. Cranes, trains and automobiles instil a sense of constant industry – as the populous swells upwards, outwards, downwards and inwards – contorting and adapting – forcing the inhabitants to recast themselves.

Hypotopia – a model city installed in the centre of Vienna by team of students from the Technical University designed to show how much housing and infrastructure could be built with the €19 billion the government is currently paying to bail out the Hypo Alpe Adria bank.
Having done the requisite calculations, they imagined it as a home for 102,574 residents- Austria’s sixth largest city , complete with shops, power plants, and garbage disposal facilities.
But no banks.
