Partholónreleasing debut single Hunt

What you may need to know…

01. Leeside progressive/sludge-metal five piece Partholón are named for a semi-fictional character of Irish history and mythos, said to have won the first battle on Irish soil and created a peaceful settlement thereafter, before slaying his wife and her lover after tasting him on his lips. The settlement succumbed to plague a week after this violence. “No God, just life, and then, Death”, as the band says in its bio.

02. While the band’s own story is nowhere near as lofty, they emerged from among the wreckage of local bands, notably the late Five Will Die. Live excursions have been few, numbering among them appearances at the Siege of Limerick festival and several shows in Cork, but expect this to change.

03. Streaming above is debut single Hunt, a heavyweight slab of post-metal weighing in at over the ten-minute mark. Grab a tay.

04. It’s taken from their upcoming E.P., Follow Me Through Body, recorded by Shaun Cadogan at Last Light Recordings in Dublin, and mastered by Marcus Lindberg of Cult of Luna. Physical copies and such are impending.

VERDICT: Maintaining the glacial pace and heft of projects past, and marrying it to atmosphere and dynamics, Partholón have put together something exceptionally promising.

What you may need to know…

01. Irene Buckley, Elaine Howley and Roslyn Steer are Crevice, a collective of electronic improv performers.

02. Each with a background in Irish independent & avant-garde music, the outfit specialises an atmospheric ambience. In their relatively short time together, they’ve come in for critical acclaim, winning the IndieCork Music Award in 2015.

03. Streaming above is Sludge Gore, a live take that forms part of their limited publicly-available output to date.

Verdict: By their nature difficult to discuss beyond vague descriptors and moods, Crevice are a compelling proposition, but must be experienced live to be fully understood.

Hope is NoiseCork alt-rock veterans release fifth album

What you may need to know…

01. The last time we stopped in with Hope is Noise, the lads were getting ready for their fifth full-length.

02. The story of Hope is Noise is a remarkable one, of four lads that got together in secondary school, and after years of touring, labels, UK/US press, and the usual passage of life like relationships and families, are still together eighteen years later, being conferred godfather status in the Cork scene as a result. A documentary on same is currently in post-production.

03. Streaming above is the aforementioned full-length, entitled Demons. A concept piece, each tune deals with a different worry or recurring thought. Available for download now, and on CD from next week at gigs and in Leeside institution PLUGD Records.

04. The band launch the record on October 8th in the Pine Lodge, Myrtleville, Co. Cork on October 8th, with the usual bus/ticket package for city folk. Joining them will be the returning Ten Past Seven, hardcore brow-beaters Horse, and new band Onkalo. Closer to home, they’ll be playing City Hall as part of the Great Irish Beer Festival from the 22nd to the 24th.

Verdict: Over the years, the lads have alternated between polished alt-rock and feral post-hardcore broadsides, and Demons sees them reconcile these urges to immediate and impactful effect.

Rory Francis O’Brienplaying Cork County Hall for Culture Night

What you may need to know…

01. The name may ring a bell for lapsed observers of Irish noisemaking – Rory O’Brien, of Kerry post-rockers Ten Past Seven, has been continuously active during that band’s hiatus.

02. These days he flies solo under his full name, singing off-kilter balladry and observations, and as Dancing Bears, a project bringing together ambient acoustic work and béalcheol. He’s also been busy with nine-headed metal nightmare Kawtiks and the annual Dragon of Shandon parade every Hallowe’en on Cork’s northside.

03. Streaming above in its entirety is 2013 cassette release The Eve of the Ides of March, recorded live in Cork’s Fred Zeppelin’s and featuring electrickery from fellow Leeside experimentalist James Fortune.

04. Performing next at Cork County Hall in Bishopstown on the 16th of September for Culture Night, alongside Crevice.

Verdict: A veteran of independent Irish music that continues to forge his own path, in his own time.

Kinsale Road Accommodation Centre, Cork

Last night.

A woman, who has a six-year-old child, was found dead at the direct provision centre on the Kinsale Road in Cork.

Movement of Asylum Seekers in Ireland writes:

It is with sadness and regret that one of our own has lost her life earlier tonight (23/08/2016) at our Kinsale Road Accommodation Centre in Cork. The details are sketchy at the moment, but it is alleged that the Korean woman was found dead at her room by her 6-year-old boy who has been playing outside at the time. On her mother not responding to his knock, the child went to the security for them to access the room and, on opening the door, the lifeless body was discovered…
