Who gave me the hot gun?

This morning.

Aras an Uachtarain, Phoenix Park, Dublin.

An Irish Defence Forces Artillery Corps field gun caught in the moment of firing during the 21 gun salute for President Higgins’ German counterpart, Frank Walter Steinmeier, President of the Federal Republic of Germany, who is on a three-day state visit with his wife Frau Elke Büdenbender (splutter!).

No wildlife was harmed in the making of this salute.

Three claims for deafness though.

Will they never learn?

From top: Outgoing Chancellor Angela Merkel and her CDU party candidate to replace her, Armin Laschet, spoke at a rally on Saturday; Germany’s SPD leader Olaf Scholz

This morning.

Olaf Scholz set his sights on the German chancellorship on Monday after his centre-left party narrowly came out on top in the general election.

The Social Democrats (SPD) edged out Armin Laschet’s Christian Democrats (CDU), the party of departing Chancellor Angela Merkel, which scored its worst-ever result.

The narrow result paves the way for complex coalition talks, meaning Mrs Merkel could still be in office at Christmas.

Mr Scholz hopes to form a government with two smaller parties, the Greens and the Free Democrats (FDP).

However, Mr Laschet could still become chancellor if the two kingmakers choose to side with him instead.

A vaccination centre in Berlin, Germany on Monday night

This afternoon.

Via Reuters:

Germany will stop paying compensation to unvaccinated workers who are forced into quarantine by coronavirus measures as it is unfair to ask taxpayers to subsidise those who refuse to get inoculated, Health Minister Jens Spahn said on Wednesday.

The rules, which will be implemented by the governments of Germany’s 16 federal states, will take effect by Oct. 11 at the latest, Spahn said, confirming the details of a draft document seen earlier by Reuters.

…..Critics have said such rules would be equivalent to a mandate for COVID-19 vaccinations because many workers cannot afford to stay at home without pay.

Canada’s vaccine advisory committee is recommending immediately suspending the use of the AstraZeneca-Oxford COVID-19 vaccine in Canadians under 55 following reports of rare but potentially fatal blood clots in Europe that appear to be connected to the shot.

The National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) updated its guidelines to provinces and territories against the use of the vaccine for younger Canadians on Monday over safety concerns.

#TakeOffYourMask trends in Ireland.

Oh,

German Police break into the home of Covid response critic Dr Andreas Noack, a nutritionist, during a livestream as he apparently falls foul of Germany’s new rona laws.

Not sure what he did wrong, but under a new law called Netzwerkdurchsetzungsgesetz social networks have to take down “blatantly illegal” hate speech within 24 hours.

That’ll learn him.

Heil no.

Ireland gives the Nazi salute in Weser Stadium, Bremen in 1939 in solidarity with the Germans. Former interned Republican and Irish captain on that day, Jimmy Dunne, is said to have shouted down the line: “Remember Aughrim, Remember 1916!”
