Blimey.

Don’t try this on the Dart.

‘…Lead, not follow. Put public health and science before political capital, ego, popular headlines, the peeves of public servants, the laissez-faire desires of lobbies, focus groups, key voter-segments, sections of the commentariat. Make clear that nobody’s night out, no steak, no pint, no sushi is worth more than the health or life of a human being.

Equally, there is no acceptable level of death, from a disease that is preventable, in a pandemic.

Mask primary-school children, introduce saliva testing. Cheap, effective, self-explanatory.

Restore contact test and trace in schools. Nphet “examining” the high numbers in the five to 12 age group is a farce. School without mitigations is the culprit, unless Mrs Murray’s second class are clubbing on the sly or doing nixers on the night-shift in the local meat plant.’

This afternoon.

Tánaiste Leo Varadkar said the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) is reviewing whether to resume testing ‘asymptomatic close contacts of primary school children’.

Via RTE News:

Leo Varadkar said if there is a change to the current policy, it is more likely to be a move to testing rather than contact tracing.

Speaking to reporters in Monaghan, he said the current spike in cases among children aged 5-12 was not surprising given that they are not vaccinated.

But he added there are indications that will change and vaccines could be offered to children in that age group.

Philip Nolan, Chair of NPHET’s Epidemiological Modelling Advisory Group

This afternoon.

Speaking on RTÉ’s News at One, Philip Nolan said: “We’re fortunate with our very high level of vaccinations and frankly the very sensible manner in which each and every one of us is taking the precautions, we seem to have come close to suppressing what is a very transmissible virus.”

…In relation to lifting the remaining restrictions by 22 October, Prof Nolan said “we’re in a good place” and “there’s nothing in the numbers at the moment, that would change the advice that NPHET would have given Government towards the end of August”.

He said the incidence has not gone up because the very high vaccination rate of adults is protecting children by reducing circulation of the virus…

But, but.

Never mind.

The Japanese government will lift the country’s near five-month-long Covid-19 state of emergency at the end of this week, a move that comes as daily new infections continue to decline sharply

The decision to lift the national state of emergency comes just a day before Suga’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) selects a new leader to succeed him. Earlier this month, Suga announced that he would drop out of the leadership race and resign from his role amid sinking approval ratings.

57.4%. That’s the percentage of Japan’s population that has been fully vaccinated against Covid-19 according to Bloomberg’s tracker. After initially being criticized for a slow start, Japan’s vaccine rollout quickly gathered pace over the last few months.

“I have no issue with the principle of (vaccinating children as young as five)…..But I would be bound by public-health guidance in respect of it, because public health will have to weigh up the benefits for the child in respect of receiving the vaccine as opposed to the risks to the child.”

‘…Younger children have had a difficult pandemic to date. In the beginning they were incorrectly labelled as “vectors”, which led to avoidance and for many to feel stigmatised, according to recent expert evidence before an Oireachtas committee. Children’s education has also suffered. The long-term psychological effect of Covid is unknown.

Children in the Pfizer trial were given 10 microgram doses, rather than the 30 micrograms recommended for over-12s. The antibody responses and side effects were comparable. In other words, the safety profile and immunogenicity data in children aged five to 11 vaccinated at a lower dose are consistent with those in other older populations at a higher dose. The researchers plan to submit the results to regulators to seek approval for vaccinating children younger than 12, the current age limit. However, there remain differing opinions as to whether young children will need to be vaccinated.

…Taoiseach Micheál Martin has signalled the State will move to vaccinate children aged between five and 11 if advised to do so. The approval of the European Medicines Agency and then consideration by the National Immunisation Advisory Council and the chief medical officer, Dr Tony Holohan, will be required. These authorities have provided sound advice so far. There will be no reason to doubt whatever recommendation is made.’
