A reward is being offered for the safe return of a three-foot high ‘Culture Duck’ which has gone missing from the Everglades Hotel.

The Culture Duck, which “lived” on the piano in the hotel foyer, went missing this week.The duck – a talking point for guests and visitors to the hotel – was created to celebrate Derry’s City of Culture status.

Jess who made a mad dash for freedom ran off from her owner Jaimie last night, resulting in a fraught dawn post on Broadsheet, is safe.

We have no idea where she’s been.

Jaimie writes:

I got Jess back! She was handed in to the vets on Charlemont Street [Dublin]! She is fine, happy as ever and acting like everything was cool all along. Thanks to all the kind and wonderful people who helped us look for Jess today. The community around where we live really were amazing. Thank you all so much…especially the kind man who found her and delivered her safely!

The RUC George Cross Widows Association has called for a halt to plans to build a peace and reconciliation centre at the site of the former Maze prison. They addressed their plea to Northern Ireland First Minister Peter Robinson.

Mr Robinson’s DUP colleague Jeffrey Donaldson, who is MP for the area, said he could guarantee that “there will be nothing in the new peace centre that will glorify terrorism”. “I put on the uniform of the Crown to fight against the IRA, I had members of my family circle murdered by the IRA,” Mr Donaldson told the programme. “I am not going to stand over anything that would glorify the actions of the IRA in any sense whatsoever.”

 

Meanwhile, 50 yards from the entrance to the former prison is a shrine (above) to UDA/UFF prisoners.

The exact time of the Summer Solstice was 6:04am when Earth’s axis was tilted most towards the Sun. Because of meteorological lag, the Summer Solstice is often considered to mark the beginning of Summer, whereas in astronomical terms the Solstice marks the middle of the season
(hence the name ‘Midsummer’s Day’). Above is an image showing the earth at 6am, just 4 minutes before the Summer Solstice.
