“There’s been a lot done to discredit the leaders of 1916 and the Rising in recent months and I think that that’s because the establishment are afraid of another rebellion.

It’s brewing, it’s brewing, because we don’t live in an equal society…We can’t stop until that’s achieved.”

From top: Fine Gael MEP Mairéad McGuinness and Brendan Ogle

Fine Gael MEP Mairéad McGuinness and Brendan Ogle, of trade union Unite and campaign group Right2Water, spoke to RTÉ’s Seán O’Rourke this morning about Irish Water.

The discussion followed reports that legal advice – commissioned by Irish Water’s parent company Ervia – apparently shows water charges can’t be abolished.

At the beginning of the interview on Today with Seaán O’Rourke, Mr Ogle accused Irish Water of selectively leaking the legal advice to a national newspaper (Irish Times), before calling on Irish Water to publish the reported legal advice on its website today.

From the interview…

Mairead McGuinness: “The privatisation issue which Brendan raises is for ideological and political reasons and I said earlier, we have politicised this issue far too much. There are over 60% of people paying their charges, it is controversial, I understand that but remember that those who obeyed the law will continue to obey the law and should be respected for it.
And, certainly from a Fine Gael perspective, our position on the water, Irish Water, and charging for water, is clear: I acknowledge that the handling of it may not have been the best of practices but we now have a structure in place which knows what’s happening above ground and below ground. And believe me, it is not pretty. We know where the investment needs to be made and we know where we need to protect our water sources and I think, if that were to be interrupted and interfered with we are going back decades and I think that would be reprehensible.”

Brendan Ogle: “Well the water notices were dealt with in Roscommon through paying progressive general taxation. There is no doubt that water notices are a disgrace, we need more investment, we need to fix the system and the way to fix the system is not to be spending €2.6billion over the next number of years on meters, it’s to put that money into fixing the leaks, protect the water in the constitution and me and Mairéad will agree on all of that. Stop wasting money on meters, stop wasting money on legal advisors, stop wasting money on public relations, put the money into fixing the leaks and protect water in public ownership.”

Twin-Headed Wolf – released/gigging pre-debut album The Long Decay

What you may need to know…

1. Julie and Branwen are Twin-Headed Wolf, a pair of twin sisters from Lahinch, Co. Clare, specialising in wonky, playful folk, making heavy use of the pair’s way with vocal harmonies.

2.
Having spent the last few years perfecting their offbeat, ethereal take on the folk oeuvre with an array of non-traditional instrumentation and charismatic live presence, the duo serves us a curveball with an acapella album of folk standards that functions as prelude to their upcoming debut LP proper: The Long Decay.

3. The record is named for its recording in the Emmanuel Vigeland Mausoleum in Oslo, back in January, a tomb/acoustic chamber with up to 14 seconds of echo.

4. With the record released in February and launched in Dublin’s Unitarian Church, the pair turn their live attention to Cork Community Print Shop, with a live engagement in the non-profit arts space on Friday, April 8th.

Verdict: Gleeful, joyfully demented folk antics with a bold experimental streak. Their impending debut LP of originals ought to be a treat.

John McKeon, from Swords, Dublin, writes:

This is the time-lapse of processed images leading to the impact on Jupiter March 17. The original purpose of the imaging session was to get this time-lapse, with a happy coincidence of the impact in the second last capture of the night.

Each of the images in the time lapse are clear because they have been processed from 55 seconds of video. the impact itself however only lasts less than two seconds, so I have shown this part without processing.

The time lapse was made using an 11″ SCT with an ASI120mm camera and Ir-pass 742nm filter.

Further to last week’s documentary fronted by actor John Connors, I Am Traveller…

I Am Immigrant.

Tomorrow night, on RTÉ Two at 9.30pm.

Melanie O’Connor writes:

Following a number of Irish immigrants, I Am Immigrant documents the daily challenges, as they see them, through their eyes.

Ricardo, a member of the marginalised Roma community who is on a quest to become a member of an Garda Síochána; Elham, a young Muslim woman who was physically assaulted on public transport for wearing a hijab and Nigerian-born, Tallaght-raised Boni Odoemene who is running in the hope of becoming the first black Student Union President.

The documentary also follows Peter O’Loughlin, founder of Identity Ireland and Chaiman of Pegida, as he tells of his motivation for stricter border controls and captures the moment when he is assaulted on his way to launch the Irish branch of Pegida outside the GPO.

Game-of-Thrones-Season-6

What you may need to know:

1. It’s the first season not based on George RR Martin’s books, so fans have no idea what will go down.

2. But Jon Snow (who knows nothing) is dead. Probably.

3.
To be honest I could never get into Game of Thrones, so I have no idea what’s going on here.

4. I do know that it’s about Lannisters and Starks and dragons. And goblins, maybe?

5. And rape. Loads of rape. It’s not the sort of thing that the beardy pig-loving bloke off the Vodafone ad would stick on to woo his lady friend.

6.
While I’m killing sacred cows… The Wire wasn’t all that either.

7.
Broadsheet prognosis: Is it too late for a Leeroy Jenkins cameo?

Release Date:
April 25 (Sky Atlantic).
