Bloomberg reports:
Ireland is being sued by the European Union authorities for failing to collect a year-old bill of as much as 13 billion euros ($15.3 billion) from Apple Inc. in a move that risks escalating tensions over the nation’s tax policies.
The European Commission on Wednesday referred Ireland to the European Court of Justice for failing to recoup the Apple bill…
…The dispute is part of a two-year-old crackdown by regulators on questionable tax deals — often involving American tech companies — throughout the EU. On Wednesday, Vestager also ordered Amazon.com Inc. to pay 250 million euros ($294 million) plus interest in back taxes to Luxembourg.
In the Irish case, until the money is recovered, Apple continues to get an illegal advantage, Vestager said.

Garda breath testing figures were “out of kilter” by six million at one point, the Oireachtas Committee on Justice has heard.
Assistant Commissioner Michael O’Sullivan, who carried out an internal review of the inflated figures, which concluded that breath test numbers were inflated by 1.4 million in a seven year period, made the admission on Wednesday morning.
…[Mr O’Sullivan said:] “Part of my recommendations are that in future there is joint training between GISC and the guards.”
He said there were “two interpretations on how the figures were to be recorded” and that he had heard disagreement as to what numbers should go into what boxes on the force’s Pulse computer system.
“For me, it resulted in significant data… In fact at one stage the figures were six million of out kilter.”
Mr O’Sullivan said neither the individual gardaí nor the call takers at GISC understood each other’s position in the process. This was because their training was different and their instruction manuals were not the same.

A Ryanair passenger jet has been escorted into Stansted airport by two RAF fighter jets following a suspected hoax security alert.
Flights were temporaily grounded at the airport as the passneger plane was diverted from its route between Kaunas, Lithuania, and Luton airport in Bedfordshire.

We think Irish women should have the right to choose – along with the thousands of women who marched at the Repeal the 8th rally last weekend in Dublin.
We also think Ryanair, an Irish company, should give free flights to women to come over to England and get their abortions legally.
We’re a young creative team currently on placement at advertising agencies inLondon. We were trained at the School of Communication Arts in solving problems, and this would go some way to solving Ryanair’s terrible PR at the moment, as well as women in the Republic getting safe and legal medical procedures.
