Children in Northern Ireland may be able to overrule their parents and get the Covid-19 vaccine against their wishes, a senior medic has said.

Dr Naresh Chada, deputy chief medical officer at the Department of Health, said some children may be able to get the Covid-19 vaccine without parental consent.

However, he stressed that officials are keen that there will be “sufficient discussion” between children and those with parental responsibility to ensure this doesn’t happen.

‘Rebecca’s Boyfriend’

The debut feature from filmmaker Craig Austin Reynolds will have its premiere at the IndieCork film festival on September 19 at the Gate Cinema, Cork.

You might recall Craig’s excellent short ‘Ringsend‘ a few years back.

Craig writes:

Rebecca’s Boyfriend is an Irish, no budget indie film made over the course of two years with a lot of heart. It’s got a brilliant Irish cast including Cameron Macaulay, Jack Gleeson (Game of Thrones, Batman Begins), Mark Doherty (Moone Boy, Ondine, Disco Pigs), and a whole host of other brilliant established and up-and-coming theatre actors.

An allegation made in the Dáil yesterday by Sinn Féin politician Matt Carthy about Minister Simon Harris was “appalling” and “an abuse of Dáil privilege”, a Fine Gael TD has said.

Speaking under privilege during a Dáil debate yesterday, Mr Carthy accused Minister Harris of leaking from Cabinet.

A spokesperson for Minister Harris said the accusation amounts to “a clear misuse of Dáil privilege and it’s untrue”.

Via France24:

Thousands of health workers across France have been suspended without pay for failing to get vaccinated against Covid-19 ahead of a deadline this week, Health Minister Olivier Veran said Thursday.

“Some 3,000 suspensions were notified yesterday to employees at health centres and clinics who have not yet been vaccinated,” Veran told RTL radio.

He added that “several dozens” had turned in their resignations rather than sign up for the jabs.

That compares with 2.7 million health workers overall, Veran said, adding that “continued healthcare is assured”.

President Emmanuel Macron gave staff at hospitals, retirement home workers and the fire service an ultimatum in July to get at least one shot by September 15 or face unpaid suspension.

Many nurses in particular have been reluctant to get vaccinated, citing safety or efficacy concerns, posing the risk that France’s inoculation drive could stall.

More than 30,000 women in the United Kingdom have reported that their periods were disrupted after getting a COVID-19 vaccine

Via Sky News:

Dr Victoria Male, a lecturer in reproductive immunology at Imperial College London, said most women return to normal after a single cycle and there was no evidence that vaccination affected fertility.

In an opinion piece in the British Medical Journal, she said the changes were not confined to a single type of vaccine, with reports among women who had received the Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca vaccines.

If there is a link between vaccines and period disruption, she said “it is likely to be a result of the immune response to vaccination rather than a specific vaccine component”.

She said research into this possible reaction is needed to understand why it might be happening.
