Minister for Finance Michael Noonan and Minister for Social Expenditure Paschal Donohoe discussing Budget 2017 at government buildings on Tuesday; James Larkin

So, about that budget.

James Larkin (no relation) writes:

An Open Letter from a Young Jobseeker to the Government

All weekly social welfare payments … will rise by €5 per week” –

Paschal Donohoe

That’s not true Paschal. Those aged 18-24 are only getting an increase of €2.70 per week, bringing our total to €102.70 while those aged 26 and over are getting a €5 increase bringing them up to €193 per week. Why this discrimination Mr. Donohoe?

There are lots of jobs available, I want them [young people] to take them up” –

Minister for Social Protection Leo Varadkar

Surely you also want the over 25s to take them up too Leo? I don’t understand why we’re different? I’m an unemployed young person. I’ve got an undergraduate degree from Trinity College, a Master’s from University College London, and experience in my field.

I’ve been granted one job interview in the last 2 months despite myriad job applications.

Where are these jobs you’re talking about Mr. Varadkar? Because at the moment I really need one of them. At the moment I’m living in Dublin because it’s where all of these alleged jobs are on offer. Dublin… where rents are sky high, Dublin… where you’ve got to take our expensive public transport to get to your one job interview in the last two months, Dublin… where I’m given €102.70 a week and told I should be able to live on it.

Jobseeker’s allowance is there to help us look for jobs, to feed us, to have some semblance of a happy existence. Mr. Varadkar, why do you want to hinder me and not help me?

Any unemployed young person who takes on a training course or an education course will get the full amount” –

Minister for Finance Michael Noonan

It’s all starting to get a bit mad now Mr. Noonan. I’ve got a degree in maths and psychology and a Master’s of Science and you want me to get more education. I’ve got plenty of education Mr. Noonan, some might say I have too much. I don’t need more education, what I need is the support to find a job.

The question I find myself answering now is, why am I still here? My family is here, my girlfriend is here, my friends are here… for God’s sake, Ireland is my home, Mullingar is my home, Dublin is my home. I want to stay and contribute to society. I don’t want to have to emigrate.

I just need a little more money to help me look for the right job. I promise that if you help me out for the next little while I’ll pay it all back and more when I’ve a job.

Being a young jobseeker in Ireland isn’t sustainable at the moment. It’s getting to the point where it feels like I’ve no other choice but to leave my home behind and seek work abroad.

Does that seem fair to you Mr. Noonan?

grosvenor cheetah

From top: Grosvenor Square, Rathmines, Dublin 6; A Cheetah

‘sup?

A huge, exotic, hungry cat prowls Dublin 6.

Only Cecil can stop him.

Rarr.

Sibling of Daedalus writes:

No one expects to meet a Big Cat in the leafy suburbs of south Dublin, but that’s what happened to Mr Cecil A. Graves at Grosvenor Square, Rathmines on March 3, 1913.

Mr Graves, described in contemporaneous news reports as a very important official in the Customs House, encountered the stray cheetah in the course of his evening constitutional.

Fortunately the customs official was also a man of action and – ably assisted in his defence by his loyal terrier – clubbed the feline interloper with a stick before stabbing it to death with his penknife.

No satisfactory explanation as to how a cheetah came to be prowling around Dublin 6 was ever forthcoming, although some suggested it might have been a pet of one of the soldiers stationed in nearby Portobello (now Cathal Brugha) Barracks.

The animal’s unclaimed carcass was ultimately appropriated by Mr Graves himself either as a trophy of the field or an illegal import. He subsequently sent it to a taxidermist to be stuffed.

The Natural History Museum in Merrion Square contains a very fine specimen of a cheetah. Perhaps it’s the same one?

Anyone?

Below are three clips are from a forthcoming documentary by Gemma O’Doherty about the 1985 death of Fr Niall Molloy in Kilcoursey House in Clare, Co Offaly – the home of Richard and Therese Flynn – and the subsequent cover-up of same.

Fr Molloy died at the house on the day after the wedding of the Flynns’ daughter Maureen to Ralph Parkes.

The first clip is of Gerry North, a neighbour of the Flynns, describing how a witness in the case told him gardai wrote his witness statement.

The second is of another neighbour of the Flynns, Brian Sheridan, who speaks about the close relationship between Fianna Fáil minister Brian Lenihan Snr and the Flynns,

In the third clip, former Garda sergeant Kevin Forde of Clara, Co Offaly, who was the first officer on the scene at the murder of Fr Niall Molloy at a mansion in Clara in 1985, describes his concerns about how the murder case was handled. The case was soon taken over by his Dublin superiors.

“‘There were two guards there to interview me’. He said ‘I was absolutely scared’, he said, going in. ‘Never had been in for an interview before in my life’ which he hadn’t and he said ‘I was scared’. And he said ‘but when I got there, I realised the two guards were more nervous than I was, in case of what I’d say’. And he said, ‘basically what happened was they told me what to say, I repeated it and they wrote it down’.

“He said it was very short and ‘I was never asked any awkward questions or anything like’ just, he said, ‘they kind of said, is this what happened and is this what happened and is this what happened and I said “yes”. And I repeated it he said and they wrote it down and that was it’.

“So I said to him one day, ‘so, 95% of what’s in that, you were told?’. ‘Oh yeah’, he said, ‘95%’. So basically, you’d to kind of add it up, the only thing that was the truth maybe, or that he had put into it, his name and address.”

Gerry North.

“I can still see Brian Lenihan swinging in a hammock and a big smile on him and I remember him going in, we were at the bar, and he made some comment, he couldn’t get a pint, so he went in and pulled his own pint which showed how friendly he was with the Flynn’s. He just  wasn’t a wedding guest, he was part of the furniture. So, you know, he was always in and out of Flynn’s.”

Brian Sheridan

“I had concerns about the investigation because when I learned that neighbours hadn’t been called to, no enquiries had been made, say house-to-house enquiries and so forth – that, that concerned me.”

Former Garda Sergeant Kevin Forde

The Fr Niall Molloy documentary will be broadcast on YouTube, where Ms O’Doherty’s previous documentary Mary Boyle: The Untold Story (2016) has garnered 200,000 views.

From top: Hillary Clinton at the UN while US Secretary of State; portion of a speech  Mrs Clinton gave to to bankers.

The furious, ongoing WikiLeaks dump of US Democratic Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman John Podesta’s emails has gained little traction in the mainstream media, least of all in Ireland.

But what do we know so far?

1. Mrs. Clinton had cosy and improper relationship with the mainstream media.

See yesterday’s post.

2. The State Department paid special attention to “Friends of Bill.”

After the massive 2010 Haiti earthquake, a senior aide to then-Secretary of State Clinton repeatedly gave special attention to those identified by the abbreviations “FOB” (Friends of Bill) or “WJC VIPs” (William Jefferson Clinton VIPs), referring to the former president. The emails show Mrs. Clinton’s State Department prioritised and benefited Mr. Clinton’s friends in the $10 billion recovery effort. The State Department also polled the popularity of Mr. Clinton in Haiti and shared the results with him.

3. Mrs. Clinton argued for “a hemispheric common market with open trade and open borders” in a private speech to bankers

4. The Clinton campaign was in touch with Department of Justice officials regarding the release of her emails.

Brian Fallon, Mrs. Clinton’s spokesman and former Justice Department staffer, appeared to have discussions with sources inside the Department of Justice about ongoing open records lawsuits requesting access to her emails while serving as secretary of state. In an email from May 2015, Mr. Fallon said that “DOJ folks” had “informed” him about the upcoming status conference in one of the lawsuits.

5. The Clinton camp was tipped off to the release of the Benghazi emails.

In April 2015, Clinton campaign Deputy Communications Director Kristina Schake referred to a “tip” from a source regarding when the State Department planned to release Mrs. Clinton’s Benghazi emails. Mrs. Clinton’s lawyer Heather Samuelson followed up on the tip, writing: “Latest: Still aiming for Friday, but potential it gets delayed until early next week because still moving through interagency review process. Will check back tomorrow and keep you posted. Quick update on this — DOS says the release of the 300 will likely happen on Thurs or Friday. Will keep you posted as I hear anything further on my end. Thx.”

6. Mrs. Clinton admitted sometimes her public and private positions differ.

In a 2013 speech before the National Multi-Housing Council, Mrs. Clinton indicated her public positions may differ with her private positions, because politics is an ugly business.

“Politics is like sausage being made,” Mrs. Clinton said. “It is unsavory, and it always has been that way, but we usually end up where we need to be. But if everybody’s watching, you know, all of the backroom discussions and the deals, you know, then people get a little nervous, to say the least. So, you need both a public and a private position.”

7. Mrs. Clinton’s spokesman mocked Catholics and evangelicals as “severely backwards.”

Hacked emails show Mrs. Clinton’s campaign spokeswoman Jennifer Palmieri and other Clinton allies openly talking about Catholics being “severely backwards” and charging that they don’t know “what the hell they’re talking about.” The April 2011 discussion between Ms. Palmieri and John Halpin, a senior fellow at the liberal Center for American Progress, mocks media mogul Rupert Murdoch for raising his children in the Catholic Church and said that most “powerful elements” in the conservative movement are all Catholic.

8. Mrs. Clinton admitted she has a hard time relating to the struggles of the middle class.

In a 2014 speech for Goldman Sachs and BlackRock, Mrs. Clinton admitted her riches and public persona lifestyle isolated her from the financial struggles of most of the country, saying her memories of her childhood is how she connects now to everyday Americans.

“Obviously, I’m kind of far removed because the life I’ve lived and the economic, you know, fortunes that my husband and I now enjoy,” Mrs. Clinton said of relating to the middle class.

9. Mrs. Clinton campaign used Benghazi as a distraction from the email scandal.

 10. The Clinton team strategized on how to delay releasing emails, knowing it was against the law.

11. Mrs Clinton confirmed  Saudi Arabia, Qatar fund ISIS.

12. As Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton traveled the globe encouraging countries to adopt fracking technology. This, despite current public views on Climate Change:

13. Hillary Clinton privately pitched corporations on “really low” tax rate for money stashed abroad

14. Mrs Clinton acknowledged that a “No Fly Zone” in Syria — now her stated policy preference — would “kill a lot of Syrians.”
