The Labour Party poster campaign has the obvious parallel with “Ein Volk, Ein Reich, Ein Fuhrer”, the slogan for the abolition of the German upper house and indeed all other parties all those many years ago.

Adenike Yisa, who has two children, was lying on her sofa in the Sandy Row area, at 02:00 on Wednesday, when she heard a loud noise.

A hatchet smashed the livingroom window of her home and landed beside her on the floor. “Seriously, I thought it was gunshots,” she said, adding that all she could do was scream at the top of her voice. “I was so terrified for my children. “I don’t know how someone could be so bitter towards someone…to do something so terrifying to your fellow human being. I don’t know how they’ve been brought up or raised. “Someone shouldn’t be feeling this way. It’s a very bad feeling,” she said, speaking of her fear.

Speaking to the Irish Times last week, Michael Noonan siad:

“So in very simple language, if I don’t bring it back I have to find something like €360 million elsewhere.

Noonan added, “when local Government and lobbyists were sending in their pre budget submission, they might suggest who I tax instead to get €360 million”.

However,

An ITIC report states that the cost for restaurants, hotels and tourism visitor fees to the State has cost €90m.

The 9,000 jobs created in tourism and hospitality has saved the Exchequer (welfare bill) €123m.

Noonan’s figures of 15,000 jobs overall then has saved €205m.

Yay!

Bono in an interview with Tim Adams in yesterday’s Observer.

Tim Adams: “The other persistent criticism is about the band’s decision to offshore part of their income through the Netherlands to avoid tax. Was it not hypocrisy for you to try to hold the Irish government to account for its spending while going through fairly exhaustive efforts to avoid paying into the Irish exchequer yourself?”

Bono: “It is not an intellectually rigorous position unless you understand that at the heart of the Irish economy has always been the philosophy of tax competitiveness. Tax competitiveness has taken our country out of poverty. People in the revenue accept that if you engage in that policy then some people are going to go out, and some people are coming in. It has been a successful policy. On the cranky left that is very annoying, I can see that. But tax competitiveness is why Ireland has stayed afloat. When the Germans tried to impose a different tax regime on the country in exchange for a bailout, the taoiseach said they would rather not have the bailout. So U2 is in total harmony with our government’s philosophy.”

Adams: “But surely you have given up some authority in doing so. Was it worth it?

Bono: “I think for many reasons people have taken a dislike to our band and to me. This is another one. I have worked as an activist for all my adult life, and I think overall that no one can doubt we have been pretty effective. You can criticise me for a lot of things, but probably not for my commitment of time and energy to this. I think some of the people who criticise us in Ireland and America have a history that you can trace back to our opposition to Noraid. A lot of the others probably hate our music. And a lot of other people probably have a point…”

The pictures of scuffles and pepper spraying yesterday was fairly depressing and frustrating stuff but here is a lighter side when a not very local header took advantage of an unguarded microphone. The UVF-linked PUP has said that there must be “safeguards” against “retribution” when dealing with the legacy of the Troubles. The party yesterday published a four-page document, ‘Transforming the legacy 2’, as Dr [Richard] Haass [US diplomat chairing all-party talks] began his work.

The postmodern document said that there could be no absolute truth about the Troubles because “truth is changeable”, arguing that there should therefore be no attempt to find “the truth” of what happened in the Troubles. It added: “There can be no attempt to use a reconciliation process to enshrine narratives about who inflicted the most and who suffered the most.”

I was wondering if anyone could explain this image being used by the Fine Gael Seanad Campaign. I’m not sure if it’s a citizen who feels constrained by the existence of the Seanad or a Senator who could be doing something more productive if he was free.
