Gary Stephens writes:
“Ireland’s finest quizzers are heading to Dublin on Saturday, March 8, for the Irish Quiz Organisation’s (IQO) Irish Open 2014, which features both individual and team quiz events.
“The venue is the Addison Lodge in Glasnevin, Dublin. After registration at 10.30am, the quizzing will start with the Irish Open itself, an individual written quiz split into six categories (Art & Culture, Civilisation, Entertainment, Lifestyle, Physical World, Sports & Games).
“This will be followed in the afternoon by the IQO’s monthly “Hot 100” 100-question individual written quiz, which is used to calculate the Irish quiz rankings from which the Irish national teams for the European and Celtic Nations championships are determined.
“The event will end with a fun table quiz with teams made up on the day.
“Entry is open to all, and costs €12. Pre-booking is not required, but entrants are encouraged to email iqo@quizireland.ie if possible so that enough quiz papers can be made available on the day.”

Maeve Binchy writing in the Irish Times described the Irish invasion:
“FOR DAYS, they had been coming over. Plane loads of supporters, wrapped in scarves, full of hope and occasionally swinging a bottle of Baileys Irish Cream by the neck as a nice communal drink while on the hoof. The young ones came noisily, singing the first three lines of about 20 songs but not being able to finish any of them.”
