The Riptide Movement – Turn On The Lights

Christmastime in Dublin city.

Lucan lads The Riptide Movement share a hopeful message in their new single to lift the gloom.

Recorded in Texas, the anthemic song features on the current Guinness campaign #KeepTheLightsOn which “shines a light on pubs highlighting their readiness for a safe re-opening.”

The nostalgic video was made by Crooked Gentlemen Films in pre-covid times.

Vintners’ Federation of Ireland Chief Executive Padraig Cribben arriving for the Oireachtus Special Committee on Covid-19 Response in June

This morning/afternoon.

With ‘gastro pubs’ allowed to re-open…

…The chief executive of the Vintners Federation of Ireland (VFI) has said that all pubs should be allowed open in December because the guidelines are the same for food and non-food pubs.

Via RTÉ

Padraig Cribben said he was hearing “all kinds of nonsense” about the sizes of kitchens and chefs, but pointed out that less than a third of one percent of Covid cases have originated in the sector.

“There’s going to be alcohol in the pubs that do food, there’s going to be alcohol in the restaurants, and there’s going to be alcohol in all the domestic settings where there will be no social distancing where there will be no masks, where there will be no hand sanitization,’ Mr Cribben said.

He said he believes there is a “vindictiveness” in NPHET towards pubs and that a decision was made not to allow them re-open three weeks ago.

Holly Mullarkey, clay artist and poet, has completed her most recent piece to honour Tuam babies and survivors of the former Mother and Baby Homes.

Earlier Holly planned supporting survivors making the teardrop shaped boats in the video above, but Covid19 put paid to those plans.

Undeterred Holly, who worked with Clay Galway in a collective for Galway 2020, set about constructing boats out of clay to represent containers of stories needing to be shared as various groups experiencing marginalisation merged for a performance on Grattan Road Beach in Galway.

Holly’s dedication to the story of the ‘Children of Tuam’ is captured and the poem recalls the lost lives of the 796 babies and children.

Joe Biden will give a speech later today highlighting the challenges facing Americans as the Thanksgiving holiday approaches and the nation faces a surge in coronavirus infections and a wave of unpopular health restrictions.

The address is meant to encourage Americans and focus on the sacrifices they are making during the holiday season, his office said, as officials across the country plead with Americans to stay at home and avoid large gatherings that can spread Covid-19.

The socks are a tribute to “Galway Yellow” (AKA Big Yellow Thing) sculpture on NUIG’s campus

Amuse your friends.

Dazzle your enemies.

Joanne Brophy, of NUI Galway Students’ Union, writes:

Our Students’ Union Charity Socks Are Back!

The socks are a collaboration with Galway company Irish Socksciety and are on sale now for €9 a pair with all proceeds going to the SU charities.

They’re an ideal present for anyone who has ever said “I’ll meet ya at the Big Yellow Thing” over the years!

The “Galway Yellow” sculpture outside the NUIG Library was created by artist Brian King in 1976 and has been a landmark and meeting point for UCG/NUIG students since then. It goes by a few nicknames most commonly “The Big Yellow Thing” but also “The Squiggle” and “Archimedes Balls”. The socks are on sale now from the SU website and the SU Shop at NUI Galway (8.30am-4pm Mon-Fri) The SU Charities this year are: Galway Rape Crisis Centre, Galway Autism Partnership and Helplink Mental Health.
