This morning.

At the offices of Abtran in Mahon, Cork.

Staff were evacuated after two members of staff working in the mail receiving centre of the offices sustained “symptoms of skin irritation” – after “suspected hazardous material” was reportedly sent to the centre.

Staff have since returned to the building and Abtran has released a statement saying “nothing suspect has been found”.

Students are planning to hold a protest to highlight a lack of affordable accommodation outside the newly built Amnis House student accommodation complex on the Western Road in Cork city.

Joe Leogue, in The Irish Examiner, reports:

UCC Students’ Union deputy president Kelly Coyle said the housing situation in Cork is at “breaking point”.

“The situation is at breaking point and students cannot take any more.”

Ms Coyle said the demonstration will focus on Amnis House in protest at the cost of rooms, ranging from €210 to €225 a week, in the student accommodation complex.

Dublin looks set to miss out on the opportunity to have a directly elected Lord Mayor, in favour of Cork.

There have been calls for Dubliners to be able to choose a mayor who could make executive decisions about how the city is run.

The Irish Independent claims a report to be presented to Cabinet will recommend Cork is prioritised as a test case for a directly elected mayor.

Fingal County Council Councillor Cian O’Callaghan of The Social Democrats, writes:

These reports are baffling. There is a strong and urgent need for a directly elected Mayor in Dublin. Dublin is facing a major housing and homelessness crisis…

…coupled with a democratic deficit in local government where most power and decision making lies with the four unelected chief executives of the Dublin local authorities.

We need unified democratic leadership of local government in Dublin and this postponement will only further hinder the economic and social development of our capital city over the coming years.

There is no reason why a directly elected Mayor cannot be introduced to Cork and other major cities simultaneously.

This proposal is the latest attempt by the Department of Housing and Local Government to maintain centralised control over local government.‘

“We have lost four of our guys this past week, all quite young with the oldest being 52 years old and the others 20s, 30s and 40s… very young. All had addictions and mental health issues going on in their lives. Two had homes while two lived their lives on the streets as their work dried up.

“We need more services and we need them now to go right to the roots of the devastation that is becoming the norm in our city. The people of Cork, and indeed Ireland, are the most caring and helpful in the world.

“I urge all our local politicians to recognise this and to heed the strong message here. No one wants this pain. No one wants these deaths, least of all the people that are dying. Help them. Give our nurses, our gardai, our firefighters, our ambulance crews, our mental health services, our addiction services, our shelters/hostels, our defence forces, search and rescue/recovery units, etc, what they need. These are our frontline services, the people we all, at one point or another, depend on.”
