‘A Jar with Breandan Behan’ is a one man show from 1970 starring Niall Tóibín as Behan.

The film was only aired once before on Irish television, on TG4 earlier this year. Directed by Bergette Pierre who at the time was a researcher in RTÉ, and produced and shot by Godfrey Graham.

Tóibín was known for his portrayal of Behan, starring in ‘Borstal Boy’ many times in the Abbey Theatre and Broadway and winning a Tony Award for it.

Staying in tomorrow?

Journalist and filmmaker Paddy Hayes writes:

I have an important documentary going out tomorrow night on TG4 called Finné: Sophia Murphy

Sophia, who was a guest on RTÉ One’s The Late Late Show’ last Friday, tells a raw unflinching story of childhood abuse by her father, and is keen to get her message of survival to others who may be suffering out there.

In spite of everything hers is an inspirational tale. She is the most inspirational and unembittered person this old hack has ever met, and I think and hope that the documentary does her justice.

The force is also reputedly 650 short of its full complement and the Department of Defence is failing in it’s efforts to recruit new members because of the unsatisfactory working conditions.

The Public Service Pay Commission is due to publish a report soon which will make recommendations to Minister Paschal Donohoe to resolve the issues.

Aonghus (Johnny Chóil Mhaidhc) Ó Coistealbha

Síolscéalta.

Produced and directed by Paula Kehoe.

Linda Ní Ghríofa writes:

Síolscéalta is a four part series following the growing year at An Garraí Glas with Aonghus (Chóil Mhaidhc) Ó Coistealbha, a charismatic young man on a mission to grow food sustainably at his homeplace. A small holder with a big vision swimming against the tide.

Aonghus was born and grew up in Na Creagáin, Connemara. His life’s work is to grow food organically and on a small scale, without chemicals or machinery, for the people of Connemara.

Having spent years abroad working on organic farms in different countries, and studying their methods and permaculture, Aonghus decided it was time to return to his birthplace and create a smallholding there, using all he’d learned alongside the older, traditional methods he grew up with.

In fairness.
