Recorded before her death in 2019, 90 year old former Radio City Music Hall Corps de Ballet soloist, Paulette Harwood shares the energy and passion that characterised her subsequent career as a dance teacher in a poignant film by her grandson James Gallagher who sez:

…she was interesting before I knew what interesting was. I didn’t set out to make a film, I knew my grandmother and the school wouldn’t be around forever and I wanted to document it before she went away

‘I Hope’ (2021) by Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota: 10,000 letters suspended by red threads in the nave of Berlin’s König Galerie.

The letters are notes from people all over the world sharing their dreams for the future after a year in lockdown. Two wire boats appear to float upward at their centre, evoking a sense of travel into some unknown, hopefully better future..

You may recall the artist’s 2015 project that made similar metaphoric use of housekeys.

‘Beyond Noh’ – a hypnotically rhythmical cycle though 3,745 masks: from ancient painted faces to pop culture mugs and the ubiquitous face-pants of the pandemic.

Created by mask enthusiast Patrick Smith, the sequence combines photos from museum archives, galleries, crowdsourced submissions and Smith’s own private collection. He sez of it:

To me, masks are an interesting way to view humanity. It seems to me that every culture in the history of the world has participated in some form of mask making, whether it’s for performance, ritual, protest, or utility.
