Rare Nature

Animal Earth is a 320 page book featuring extraordinary photographs of some of the world’s most obscure and eye-candiful species compiled by a panel of animal specialists and researchers.

The book, published by Thames and Hudson will be released mid November.

Photographer Darren Pearson spent a year creating 700 separate ‘light paintings’ which he then stitched together into this nifty animated short ‘Light Goes On’.

Hipster Assassin

An incredibly contemporary-looking and rather chilling colourised photo of the would-be assassin Lewis Powell following his arrest in 1865.

Powell – who conspired with John Wilkes Booth to kill President Lincoln – attempted to kill Secretary of State William H. Seward, which he failed to do, despite his brutal best efforts.

From a series of recently colourised US Civil War era photographs.

Lovely Dogs

After sifting through more than 8000 canine portraits, the British Kennel Club has chosen the six category winners of its 2013 dog photography competition: Portrait, Dogs at Play, Dogs at Work, Man’s Best Friend, Puppies, “I Love Dogs Because…” and a special extra category ‘Be More Dog’.

I’ve just got back from Paris where I was helping to promote ReAct Paris, a conference organised by the European Parliament to tackle the problems of unemployment in Europe, particularly youth unemployment, which in some parts of Europe stand close to a miserable 30%.
