Using our success in sport as leverage to sell the sod as an event destination?

Fáilte Ireland will open the 2015 Sport Tourism European Summit in Thomond Park, County Limerick, this morning with a montage of Irish hospitality, passion and overachieving sporting greatness.

Miriam Kennedy of Fáilte Ireland writes:

It’s a pleasure to launch this video and present a snapshot of all that is good about Ireland.  The purpose of “Ireland – The Event Island” video is to act as a key tool when selling Ireland as an event destination overseas.  We believe it evokes a great sense of pride and hope that it will be used to profile, promote and pitch all that Ireland has to offer within the event space

For the sake of balance, you may be interested in this Vote No video. I was going to Vote Yes in the referendum on May 22nd, and so I was making one of those #RingYourGranny / Parents videos. However when I spoke to my dad, he raised a legitimate reservation that made me change my mind. I just hope that people don’t judge me until they’ve heard all the arguments and made up their own minds….

Eamonn Crudden of DKIT writes:

This is a 15 minute sci-fi film set on an Irish farm in the near future where the robots are slowly but surely taking over. It was made by some of my students   2 years ago and has just been released ‘into the wild’. I think your audience would get a buzz out of it.

Directed by Eoin O’Meachair. Produced by Jamie Smith. Written and edited by Ciaran Cumiskey. Cinematography by Eric Scott. 1st AD Michael Doran. Starring Desmond Daly, Colm Deans, Nic Cargin, David Sheahan and Blaithnaid Ryan.

In a flashy effort to help their military fend off the perceived threat of Russian submarines, Swedish peace activists have deployed a neon underwater “defense system” which sends out a welcoming message reading “this way if you are gay.”

The animated subsurface neon sign was recently installed off the coast of Stockholm by the Swedish Peace and Arbitration Society (SPAS). Submarines in the vicinity of the so-called “Singing Sailor” are welcomed by morse-coded message and captions that state in English and in Russian: “Welcome to Sweden. Gay since 1944,” in reference to the year Sweden legalised homosexuality.

An excerpt from upcoming documentary The Queen Of Ireland, directed by Conor Horgan, who writes:

As the referendum approaches, we are busy shooting the final parts of ‘The Queen of Ireland’. The film is about Rory O’Niell and his journey from the small town of Ballinrobe [Co Mayo] to being a “national fucking treasure”.

We shot a series of in-depth interviews with Rory last Friday, and when I asked him how he’d feel if the referendum wasn’t carried, his answer was so personal and well said that we decided to release a clip from it before the vote on May 22nd. Vote yes!
