Mr Desmond warns of “Ballymun Towers South Dublin”  and “modern-day slums”

The full letter sent this week to local politicians from billionaire Dermot Desmond concerning the development of RTÉ land close to his property on Ailesbury Road, Dublin 4.

Mr Desmond threatens to use his “resources” to challenge fast-track planning laws being applied to build 611 apartments on the site “all the way to the European Courts”.

Fight!

Statue of Oliver Cromwell outside the House of Commons, Westminster, London, England

To The Statue Of Lord Cromwell

we cannot get through the bars to do what we would like to do to you.

we cannot pass through the cordon of armed policeman who aim to guard you

like a New Model Army, but blue, with silver-nippled custodians on heads.

ambivalently, the protector is protected by some who remember one head,

one neck, one life – how could such lush curls have been shorn by ax? –

but care nothing for six hundred thousand Irish heads, as collateral

as cattle. while Dr. Johnson keeps a cat, Lord Cromwell keeps a lion!

such a pet can’t be easy to feed when all you have is a sword and Bible

unless you recite from Numbers while tossing it Roundhead foreskins.

and ignoring its roar of rebuke in Gaelic: MALLACHT CHROMAIL ORT!

now you seem troubled by the latest debates regarding your own status.

what would I do if I got through? having thought about it long and hard

I’d like to confiscate your holier-than-thou book with immediate effect

and place in your hand another book, the First Folio of Shakespeare

for it’s what you tried to do to him that should most vex your countrymen.

A nationwide campaign is launched to “resuscitate the Irish yoga industry” ahead of World Yoga Day this Sunday.

It is estimated that more than 300,000 people practice yoga regularly in Ireland.

Colm Walsh, of Yoga Dublin, writes:

The Association of Irish Yoga Studios was recently formed to get Ireland’s yoga studios back open, and to keep an industry that was thriving just a few months ago, viable in the future.

They are highlighting that the higher VAT rate for individual service providers has been erroneously applied to yoga studios which are businesses which have fixed overheads, running purpose designed facilities with associated costs, rates, insurance and staff wages.

Unlike yoga studios, gyms had their incorrect classification rectified in 2012.

Several yoga studios have closed permanently since April, and the Minister of Finance must act now to save the rest of the yoga industry in Ireland.

Yoga studios have never been properly VAT classified and this incorrect VAT rate is crippling them as facility providers.

Via RTÉ:

All sporting activity is set to get the green light to resume from 29 June under plans going to Cabinet this afternoon, RTÉ understands.

However, individual sporting organisations will decide how best to proceed after that date.

It is possible, according to Government sources, that most organisations might decide not to return to competitive action for some time.

Meanwhile

It is expected that the reopening of hairdressers and barbers will also be brought forward.

It is also understood that gatherings of up to 50 will be allowed indoors from 29 June under the proposals set to be tabled at Cabinet today.

This would rise to 100 from 20 July. Outdoor events will see crowds of 200 permitted from 29 June and this would increase to 500 from 20 July….

Right so.
