!000 Beasts featuring Janet Grogan: Lord (It’s OK)

!000 Beasts is a project where Irish Musician Cuan Sweeney teams up with like-minded souls in search of perfect electro-pop.

Souls such as golden-throated Janet Grogan.

Emma Harney writes:

Like many people, Cian first became aware of Dubliner Janet Grogan when she took part in The X Factor UK in 2014. Janet was one of the most talked about contestants of that season and her controversial elimination even prompted Simon Cowell to say that he had made a mistake in letting her go.

However, when a Dublin based international music publisher initially introduced Cian to Janet, the duo became a formidable team, writing pop songs for major label artists across the world. It wasn’t long before they co-wrote Lord together, specifically for 1000 Beasts.

Video features Bethany Antonia and Ray Bethley.

Directed by Lochlainn McKenna.

Barry McElduff

“It is with great sadness that, after more than 30 years as an active Sinn Féin member and public representative, I am tendering my resignation as MP for West Tyrone,” he said.

“The reason I am doing so is because of the consequences of the Twitter video which caused such controversy over the last week. But the deep and unnecessary hurt this video caused the families of Kingsmill is my greatest regret.

“Had I been conscious of the connection to the terrible atrocity at Kingsmill, I would certainly not have posted that tweet. I genuinely did not make that connection.”

From top: Stepehen Rae; Tweet from Minister for Communications Denis Naughton

Stephen Rae was invited by the commission to join the group, which will advise the European Commission on all issues in relation to the spread of false information across traditional and social media, and how to cope with the consequences.

The group’s first meeting will take place in Brussels next Monday.

Commenting on his appointment, Mr Rae said: “We have seen the widespread damage that can be done by the wilful dissemination of false information on social media platforms.

“I look forward to meeting and exchanging views with my colleagues on the Expert Group as we advise the European Commission on dealing with this complex challenge, which has major social and political consequences for citizens.”

Clockwise from top left: Former Secretary General of the Department of Justice Noel Waters; Terry Prone, of the Communications Clinic, former Garda Commissioner Noirin O’Sullivan and former Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald

Last Friday.

At the Disclosures Tribunal in Dublin Castle.

Evidence was heard from the former Secretary General at the Department of Justice Noel Waters and Head of Legal Affairs at An Garda Siochana Ken Ruane.

Mr Ruane is scheduled to continue giving evidence today and will be followed by Annemarie Ryan, of the Chief State Solicitor’s office.

On Friday, it also heard of Michael McDowell SC, for Sgt McCabe, say although nobody was suggesting that somebody was going to ask Sgt McCabe at the O’Higgins Commission of Investigation if he ever abused a child,  “there was consideration, God knows by whom, given to the question of putting Ms D’s allegation firmly in the middle of the table at the O’Higgins Commission”.

It also heard of communications between the former Garda Commissioner Noirin O’Sullivan and the former Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald and the bizarre drawing up of statements by the Department of Justice for the Garda Commissioner to make to the Department of Justice.

That particular matter prompted  Judge Charleton to recall Myles na gCopaleen and ask: “If the Garda Commissioner is writing to the Department of Justice what the Department of Justice wants to have written to it, what in heaven’s name does that mean in terms of any genuine progress in terms of attitude?”

It also heard of a draft speech Ms O’Sullivan sent to Ms Fitzgerald on May 18, 2016 –  after the Irish Examiner broke the story in May 2016 about the O’Higgins Commission of Investigation and the strategy employed against Sgt McCabe – and in which she suggested Ms Fitzgerald tell the Dail, among other things, “I have interrogated this matter in detail with the 22 Commissioner of An Garda Síochána and now present to the House the outcome…I wish to state here now that I have full confidence in the Commissioner” (more about these communications in a later post).
