Tanaiste and Fine Gael Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Leo Varadkar with Fianna Fail Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Michael McGrath and Minister of Justice, Social Protection, Community and Rural Development, Heather Humphreys speak to the media  following a cabinet meeting.

Via RTÉ:

The rules around employee rights changed during Covid-19 when, in March 2020, the Government introduced emergency measures in response to the pandemic.

It meant workers who were temporarily laid off or put on short time hours because of Covid-19 were not allowed to claim redundancy.

The department said this rule was introduced to “reduce the pressure on employers who were already struggling and to reduce the number of insolvencies and permanent job losses over the course of the pandemic”.

That rule will be suspended at the end of this month.

He said they estimate this redundancy scheme will cost between €30 to €130 million over the next three years as it will continue until 2024.

He said every candidate can receive up to €1,860 under this statutory redundancy.

He also said it is impossible to estimate how many redundancies will happen over the coming months following today’s decision.

The West Gate Freeway, Melbourne, Australia

This morning.

Melbourne, Australia.

Via The Age:

Police have confronted thousands of protesters on Melbourne’s busiest freeway, appearing to fire pellets into the crowd outside a service station. Traffic has been blocked on a large part of the West Gate Freeway for hours.

Protesters reached the centre of the West Gate Bridge about 3.30pm AEST, then started their descent back down the bridge, and began heading back into the city.

When protesters reached a service station past the base of the bridge, they were met with lines of police who appeared to fire pellets into the crowd…

Justin Trudeau will hang on to his job as Canada’s prime minister in an election victory Monday that fell short of his main objective: tightening his hold on power.

With his Liberals high in the polls, Trudeau plunged the country into an early election in August in hopes the party could gain at least 15 additional seats in the House of Commons to turn his incumbent minority into a far more powerful majority.

Instead, Trudeau returns to the Prime Minister’s Office with roughly the same number of seats his Liberals had when he called the summertime snap election.

“I hear you when you say that you just want to get back to the things you love and not worry about this pandemic or about an election,” Trudeau said in Montreal as he delivered his victory speech. “The moment we face demands real important change. And you have given this parliament and this government clear direction.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin yesterday

This morning.

The Kremlin-loyal United Russia party has recorded an overwhelming victory in Russia’s parliamentary elections.

With all the votes tallied, the electoral commission said Tuesday that United Russia had won 49.83% of the vote. It was also ahead in 198 seats of the 225 deputies apportioned by party lists.

On Twitter, the party said it had received a constitutional majority.

Russian President Vladimir Putin thanked voters for their “trust.” United Russia will have more than two-thirds of deputies in the 450-seat lower house of parliament, known as the State Duma.

Despite assurances following the leak of the Mother and Baby Home Commission of Investigation’s final report last January that survivor groups would be the first to know about proposals for a new redress scheme, details appear to have been leaked at cabinet level.

Mother and Baby Home Scheme Widened (Irish Times)

This morning.

Via Minister for Children Roderic O’Gorman:

To survivors and former residents of Mother and Baby Institutions, their families and advocates,

In July, I contacted you all to let you know that I hoped to bring proposals for a redress scheme to Government early in the autumn session. I want to now update you on my intention to bring proposals to Government for approval early in October and to publish them on the same day that they are approved.

I know that there is ongoing media speculation regarding the scheme, however, I can confirm that Government has not yet approved proposals for the scheme. I plan to bring detailed and costed proposals to Government early in October and publish them immediately once approved. As soon as this happens, they will be shared directly with you.
