You may recall how Andrew McMenamin opened a crisp sanger shop in Belfast yesterday.

Well.

It sold out within two hours.

Not only that.

UTV reports:

“Look, it’s a bit of fun,” Andrew said. “But we’re spinning Belfast positively – it’s Belfast baps from Kirk’s Bakery, it’s Nutty Crust, it’s Tayto. It’s local products, it’s local butter. I believe someone is actually in talks with Ulster Fry to open one in Dublin …”

Newstalk reports:

“The first ever crisp sandwich cafe has opened its doors in Belfast. The cafe came about after a website, UlsterFry.com, did a mock article about one such cafe. They were then approached by an owner wanting to start one…They offer Tayto, Walkers and even Monster Munch for your sandwich. Andrew McMenamin is now the owner of the Simply Crispy Cafe, located at 8 Bedford Street in the city.”

An anti-abortion protester has been convicted of harassing a Marie Stopes clinic director at her Belfast city centre offices.

Bernadette Smyth, who leads the anti-abortion group Precious Life, was warned she could face a jail sentence for her campaign against Dawn Purvis.

The judge said: “This case was run, no-holds barred, in a vicious and malicious fashion.”

He said an investigating police officer had been deliberately slandered.

Ms Purvis had been the victim of an unwarranted attack, the judge said.

Mrs Smyth was also told she will be ordered to pay compensation and would be restrained from the area around the clinic.

The 51-year-old had denied harassing Ms Purvis – a former Progressive Unionist Party assembly member – on two dates earlier this year.

With sentencing put back until next month, Mrs Smyth was told her potential punishment could be community service or prison.

The judge said anti-abortion campaigners stationed outside the clinic had been forcing any women of child-bearing age to identify their reasons for entering.

Because of that conduct, he said the range of possible sentencing may go from community service to imprisonment.

Mrs Smyth was told she will certainly have some form of restraining order imposed on her.

Although she left court without making comment, her solicitor described the verdict as “a disappointment for Christians worldwide“.

Almost two tonnes of metal has been collected from the ashes of cremated bodies in Northern Ireland over the last four years as part of a recycling scheme, but bereaved families were not told, The Detail can reveal.

Precious metals including jewellery, gold teeth and fillings, as well as metal hips and nails from coffins are routinely collected from the site of Northern Ireland’s only crematorium in a process that began in 2010.

The materials are shipped to the Netherlands where a specialist company sorts the metals, with some being re-used in the construction of objects as diverse as road signs and aircraft engines.

Recycled material, it’s all relative.™

The mural at Talbot Street in the yard of the Northern Ireland War Memorial depicts the Greek sophist philosopher Protagoras, a proponent of agnosticism, who wrote:

Concerning the gods, I have no means of knowing whether they exist or not or of what sort they may be, because of the obscurity of the subject, and the brevity of human life.

It’s a good thing Dr Paisley’s not around to hear that kind of talk so it is.

An anti-abortion protester accused of behaving like a witch told a Belfast court: “I’m no witch, I’m a Catholic”.

Bernadette Smyth, who leads the anti-abortion group Precious Life, was replying to a prosecution lawyer.

Mrs Smyth, of Suffolk Street, Ballymena, County Antrim, denies harassing Marie Stopes clinic director Dawn Purvis.

The lawyer suggested she had laughed at Ms Purvis in a “cackling, jeering, mocking way, in a witch’s manner.”

Ms Smyth replied: “I can’t agree with this court that I’m a witch. I’m a Catholic.”

The case concerns two incidents involving the accused that happened outside the Marie Stopes Clinic, Great Victoria Street, Belfast, in January and February.

The case continues.

Bishop of Down and Connor Noel Treanor has defended spending an estimated seven-figure sum on refurbishing his residence at a time when the Pope is promoting a simpler life for Church leaders. Dr Treanor is to move back into the luxurious 15,000 sq ft Lisbreen House next month after two years of building work on the property.

The Irish News has learned:

  • Stormont provided more than £300,000 of taxpayers’ money for the refurbishment
  • other funds came from two private benefactors

Dr Treanor said the work was done for “future generations” and was a “contribution to the economy in a difficult time” however Dr Treanor was unable to provide a total cost for the building project

“It’s my job for whatever number of years I am spared, if I’m spared for another 12 or 13 years to maintain two things – the quest for faith and at the same time to keep the fabric of the diocese, you could call it, the parishes up to scratch.”

However, a victims campaigner has criticised the extravagance of the renovations saying the amount spent on it was a “disgrace”.
