Micheál Martin said the current tax breaks have to be kept in place to provide social housing for families through leasing properties from these funds.

He said that if the tap was turned off immediately then 2,400 families would lose out on getting a home this year.

Mr Martin added that the future model will focus on direct building, but he said: “The reality is we need more houses.”

He said there would be a move to a new system where the State would ultimately own leased properties but this cannot happen immediately.

Government Buildings.

Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe gave some detail to his plan to increase Local Property Tax….

…Under the changes, all properties will be revalued on 1 November this year.

According to the CSO, house prices nationally have risen by 90% on average since their low point in 2013.

According to an analysis by the Department of Finance, 11% of property owners may see a decrease in their tax, while 53% may see no change.

It said 33% may see their tax go up one band, up to €100, while 3% may see a jump of two bands or over €100.

The exemptions for people who bought in “ghost estates” will lapse, while exemptions for people in pyrite damaged homes in Limerick and certain eastern counties will be phased out.

…Income thresholds for deferrals have been raised to €18,000 for a single person and €30,000 for a couple.

The most expensive student accommodation rooms on the Belfield campus are set to increase from €8,815 a year to nearly €10,000 under the plans. Accommodation in the other student housing blocks would increase from €7,114 to €8,000 for the nine-month academic year.

“We’re not out to make money from the students, we’re out to put additional student residences into the market,” he said.

Prof Deeks said while students had reacted “quite emotionally” to the increase, he had discussions with the students union on Thursday “to allow us move forward in partnership”

The Story of James.

Louise Hannon writes:

An interview with James who lives in a soggy tent by a roadside in Dublin watching rough sleepers die.

From the perspective of FG who are not building social housing in the numbers needed, this man is just collateral damage. Expendable.

We are better than this.
