You may have seen the video footage of John Rooney, 22, which shows him being dragged upside down by gardai, forcing his head to scrape along the ground, outside the US embassy on Saturday during a protest in support of the people of Gaza.

Mr Rooney then began to have an epileptic seizure and friends needed to give him medicine.

The Irish Mirror has since reported that Mr Rooney plans to make a complaint to the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission over the incident.

The  Sunday Independent early edition (top) and later editions (above)

The current edition of The Phoenix magazine claims that Sunday Independent editor Anne Harris has agreed early severance terms with Independent News and Media and will leave in October.

Yesterday’s Sunday Independent published an opinion piece by Ms Harris claiming that The Phoenix article was entirely incorrect, saying: ‘the whole story is a lie’.

However Ms Harris’ column in the  Saturday Night Edition of the Sunday Independent – which reaches shops in Dublin on Saturday night – was different the paper’s later edition – which usually reaches shops nationwide early Sunday morning. to wit:

Gavin Sheridan, of TheStory.ie, writes:

There was one critical paragraph that was substantially edited between editions (there are other changes too but I think this is the more significant). The early edition of the paragraph was written thusly (emphasis mine):
‘Since, as I pointed out earlier, none of this is true, I am clearly not the only one defamed. Denis O’Brien is the major shareholder in INM. In theory, with 29pc of the shares, he does not control it. In practice, he does.
But in the later edition of the paper, it said:
‘Since, as I pointed out earlier, none of this is true, I am clearly not the only one defamed. Denis O’Brien is the major shareholder in INM. In theory, with 29pc of the shares, he does not control it.’
I’m not sure this clearly significant change could be blamed on an over zealous sub-editor. The meaning of the entire paragraph has been altered. Why was the column changed and by whom? Was it done with the permission of the editor and author? Which column represents the truly held beliefs of that author? Surely it can’t be both?”

Anyone?

Why was this Anne Harris Sunday Independent column modified? (thestory.ie)

Thanks Gavin

In a week that saw [at the UNHRC in Geneva] a principal officer at the Department of Health admit that Ireland’s abortion law discriminated against women who could not afford to travel to Britain, Dublin South East TD Lucinda Creighton [on yesterday’s Marian Finucane programme on RTÉ Radio One], chose another story to discuss…

Marian Finucane: “You picked out as well a story in the Business Post called ‘NAMA Offers Deals To Stop Developers Seeking Bankruptcy Abroad’.”

Lucinda Creighton: “Yeah. I just had a quick look at that. I suppose the thing that strikes me about this is that we have to be very careful when we’re trying to resolve the huge problems that we still obviously have in the property sector. A lot of major players who have been embroiled now for a number of years in trying to resolve debt overhang etc with NAMA that we don’t forget about all of the other business in the country that is literally you know collapsing under the weight of debt and this is something that Morgan Kelly and many others have pointed to as one of the biggest challenges to economic recovery in this country so. I have a fear, I have a concern that if we talk about special circumstances for bankruptcy where people involved in property development and speculation in the past and we ignore the huge existing problem and challenge for a lot of people in small business who can’t afford to go to the UK for bankruptcy purposes for example, being truthful. It’s just not an option for them. You know I think prioritising one cohort of business people above others is actually, firstly is completely unfair and secondly actually risks ignoring probably the biggest challenge we have to economic recovery which is getting the small and medium sized enterprise domestic economy back functioning.”

The ‘CJ5 House’ – an innovative, inward-looking residence maximising the Floor Area Ratio (FAR = 1.0) of a 5m x 35m side on the outskirts of Vienna by filling the entire site.

Designed by Caramel Architekten, the peaks and troughs of the roofline  create a series of levels and voids for the interlocking rooms and enclosed courtyard beneath. Heavy insulation, heat pump and photovoltaics make the house virtually independent from the grid.

You may recall how Brendan Boland, from Dundalk, was one of two boys sworn to secrecy in 1975 by Cardinal Seán Brady, after he was sexually abused as a child by the late Fr Brendan Smyth.

Fr Smyth raped and abused more than 100 children between the 1940s and 1990s.

In yesterday’s Sunday Times, Justine McCarthy reported on how Mr Boland has written a book, Sworn To Silence, which was published last Thursday.

In her article Ms McCarthy told how Cardinal Brady offered Mr Boland €10,000 to settle his High Court case for damages and to include legal costs for 14 years’ litigation but that Boland settled the case for €100,000 plus costs in 2012.

Ms McCarthy also wrote:

“In his book, Boland, a technical support engineer who works in the UK, said he asked a garda who worked on the investigation which led to Smyth’s imprisonment in 1997 if Brady was interviewed as part of their inquiries. He received an inconclusive answer.

Two other priests who attended the secret interview with Boland in March 1975 were interviewed by gardai in 1995.

A spokeswoman for the Catholic hierarchy has confirmed that Brady was not interviewed by gardai.

“Cardinal Brady had no knowledge of a garda investigation in the early 1990s regarding Smyth,” the spokeswoman said. “If he had been approached by the gardai he would have made a statement.”

A political controversy over the State’s failure to extradite Smyth to Northern Ireland brought down the Fianna Fail-Labour government in November 1994. Brady was installed as a cardinal and the primate of Ireland the following month.
