Cyclists protest for more of the transport budget be allocated to cycling infrastructure in Dublin. Campaigners claim about 1% of the transport budget is allocated to cycling and they are asking for at least 10%.

They say that EU recommends 20% be given to cycling from transport budgets and would like to see “more advanced traffic lights, better parking, segregated cycling lanes to name but a few”.

One of the images now available in the just launched Historical Digital Collection at Dublin City Libraries.

Traffic jams during a 1970’s CIE bus strike Croagh Patrick Pilgrimages (1958), and jubilant Heffo’s Army supporters are among 43,000 historic photographs and documents which are being made freely available online by Dublin City Council today.

These formerly unseen images date as early as 1757 and include photographs, postcards, letters, maps and historical memorabilia.

Highlights of the collection, which can be found at digital.libraries.dublincity.ie include the Fáilte Ireland Photographic Collection with images of people, places and tourist locations all across Ireland from 1930s, the Irish Theatre Archive Photographic Collection, and Dublin City Council Photographic Collection.

Name those jammers, anyone?

LÉ Roisin responded to a request to provide medical assistance and recover an injured fisherman approximately 200 nautical miles off Loop Head today. While on a Maritime Security and Defence patrol off the West coast, a distress signal was received by the LÉ Róisín regarding an injured crew man onboard a Russian fishing vessel. The Russian fishing vessel requested any vessel in vicinity with medical facilities onboard to give assistance. The casualty on the Russian fishing vessel was a 34 year old male with suspected fractures of the thigh and shoulder, head injury and shock.  Rescue Coordination Centre Valentia and Coast Guard Helicopter Rescue 115 responded as well as L.É. Róisín. L.É. Róisín was instructed to close the position of the casualty while the helo operation was launched.  L.É. Róisín transferred its medical and deck team onboard the fishing vessel, who assisted in providing medical care and managing the transfer of the casualty to the Coast Guard helicopter. 22/2/2017 Photo Defence Forces/RollingNews.ie

01. One of the founding fathers of Irish hip-hop, Tullamore man RíRá helped lay the foundations for our homegrown beat game as part of Scary Éire, alongside DJ Mek, Dada Sloosh and Mr. Browne.

02. He’s been more than active since Scary Éire’s initial album-shelving-induced disbandment, with a string of singles, extended-plays and LPs, all self-released. In addition, he’s had countless features on Irish hip-hop releases, most recently of note, his collab with Waterford’s Nylon Primate.

The IMRO Live Music Venue of the Year Awards happened at their HQ in Dublin last night. Who got the gongs, you ask?

The National Venue of the Year went to Wexford’s National Opera House.

The regional awards for outstanding venues went out thusly:

Dublin – Vicar Street
Rest of Leinster – Watergate Theatre, Kilkenny
Connacht – The Quays, Galway
Munster – Coughlan’s, Cork
Ulster – Voodoo, Letterkenny, Co Donegal

Special commendations were also handed out to venues by Hot Press head Niall Stokes:

“It has been an outstanding year for live music in Ireland. That is, of course, true in relation to what is happening in the big venues, like The Olympia Theatre, which has just been refurbished with spectacular results, and at festivals – which are so important to the ongoing health of Irish music.

But from the point of view of working Irish musicians, it is really encouraging also to see the emergence of venues in smaller towns around the country, where they can go and gig – and both find an audience and earn their wages. Which is why I am so pleased to have presented awards tonight to Mike The Pies in Listowel and Boyle’s of Slane.

It is the hard work and dedication of the people who make things happen in venues and bars like these – and countless others around the country – that make all the difference. Long may they flourish.”
